Has anyone tried magnesium L-threonate…

…either for themselves or for a loved one with dementia? After reading a lot of good things about them, I started using magnesium taurate and magnesium glycinate to help with stress and sleep, and it seems to help. But then I read that magnesium L-threonate is beneficial for brain health and helps with focus, etc. I just ordered a reliable brand and plan to take it myself, but I wonder about giving it to my husband with vascular dementia.

I have not, but my husband, with MCI, takes the mag glycinate- mainly for sleep and not up to the bathroom so many times at night

There are no high quality studies of magnesium supplements used in dementia patients and no valid conclusions can be made from the limited (mostly poorly designed) studies available. Safety, efficacy and dosage totally unproven. GI side effects are common, magnesium can be risky with kidney disease and it can interfere with absorption of some antibiotics and bisphosphonates (used for osteoporosis).

Neither my husband nor I have kidney disease, take bisphosphonates (and I never will d/t the many problems related to them), nor are we currently on antibiotics. I know most mineral supplements need to be separated by at least two hours from other meds for absorption reasons. As far as GI symptoms, if that would happen, simply stopping the magnesium should clear that up in a short time. I’ve been taking magnesium taurate and magnesium glycinate for a few weeks and have had no problem with those. I don’t go crazy and overdo the amount I take because like the saying goes, you can have too much of a good thing.

As far as no high quality studies with it being used in dementia patients, that may be true. But when the dementia patient is 90 years old and in reasonably good health except for being in an advanced stage of vascular dementia, I don’t expect to get those high quality studies in time. I just wondered if anyone on this forum had any experience with that one particular formulation magnesium L-threonate.

I am glad I read this original question, bclane,- as I said , husband takes Mag Glycinate. I had time to read about L-Threonate this morning and am very interested in trying this- either after talking to our functional/integrative practitioner or before as we won't meet with her until Oct. 7; we could do a six weeks trial within that time.
Hope we hear from anyone else who has tried it.

I hope we hear from others, too. And I'll be very interested to hear what your practitioner says about it. I got my order delivered an hour or so ago, and I'll probably start it tomorrow.

A reminder to check with your doctor and/or pharmacist before taking supplements.

Unlike prescription drugs, many supplements or natural health remedies don't go through strict safety testing. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration, also called FDA, does not check most supplements before they go on the market. That means they:

- May not contain what the label says.
- May be contaminated or mixed with other substances.
- May not have been tested for safety or effectiveness.

Always talk to your healthcare team before starting any new supplement, even if it's "just a vitamin." Your pharmacist is also a good healthcare partner who can check for possible medication interactions if you are taking other meds or supplements. Supplements can have side effects or interact with medicines.

My husband was diagnosed with vascular dementia seven years ago. Restless leg syndrome started three years ago. He is taking magnesium theonate for RLS and it helps. The brand is MagMind. I think it has also helped his cognition; there have been no more delusions, and he is sleeping through the night.

A c-path will help sleep breathing and restless legs, too.

@janetwalters
How long did it take before you saw the improvement?
