Starting Tagrisso: What time of day do you take it? With food?

Posted by dragonspark @dragonspark, Nov 28, 2023

I will be starting Tagrisso soon. The pharmacy is sending it to me and I should receive it tomorrow. I am supposed to let my oncologist know when I start it.

The pharmacist told me to take it with or without food did but just be consistent. For those of you that take it, when do you take it? In the morning? When you go to bed? With food? Without?

Just curious for others experiences. I’m not sure if it’s true, but in another social media platform group I’m in, someone there claims cancer cells are more active while you sleep but I’m not sure I want to take it at night when I go to bed in case I have side effects.

Also, how quickly did you experience side effects and what were they? And what do you use to manage them?

Thanks!

I take mine as soon as I come downstairs after getting up, right before breakfast. I record it in a notebook daily. My side effects were mild diarrhea (that is basically gone now), swollen ankles and feet and sore fingertips! I get nauseous, too and take Zofran or Compazine for that. I'm on a very mild blood pressure med at night for the swelling of the ankles. They also gave me a prescription for potassium for the heart. (mine was running low) I hop this helps. Just try to stay consistent. I'd advise writing the meds (in a notebook or on a calendar) you take daily when you take them, so you'll not skip or double a dose.

Same. Helpful advice. I’m 94; I set my schedule to alarm on my iPhone. Each time I’ve taken my designated med, I place a check next to the med.
Set up a system that works for you. It’s helpful to track changes you experience.

I started taking Tagrisso about a month ago and take it when I wake every morning. I was doing great for about 3 weeks then started with diarrhea and nausea and some mouth sores also had a light rash on my body arms legs and drug with some small pimple like marks on my face. Hope this will gradually clear up as my body adjust to medication. My oncologist just put me on Doxycycline for the rash.

Oh…so sorry. My oncology medical team alerted me to those side effects. I tried different moisturizers that help different parts of my body. Some of the most helpful have been:
Aruba Aloe moisturizer which can be found at Amazon; . Gold Bond Healing; La Roche Posay triple moisturizer, and Udderly Smooth for difficult areas. The medical team suggested that I brush and use mouthwash whenever I eat anything to try to keep sores at bay.
I haven’t been able to address sores in my scalp. Twenty years ago I had shingles and pock mark areas became inflamed.

I take first thing in the morning when I first get up. If you take supplements put a 1 1/2 to 2 hours later. The only side effects I’ve had has been similar to pimples, like I’m going through puberty for the second time. I take the full dose of 80 mgs. Monitor changes if you have any and let your oncologist know. I’ve been on it now for over 2 1/2 years and I’m grateful I didn’t need chemo.

Hello, I am no longer on Tagrisso after 3 years of treatment. During treatment I was prescribed Cefadroxil by my Mayo dermatologist for the acne side effect and it worked great. I believe doxycycline is the standard first order of treatment by oncologists for the Tagrisso skin rash however it appears that cefadroxil is more effective and preferred by dermatologists (at least by my experience).

I had mouth sores for months. I tried several products for mouth sores and they did not work. I found that if I rinses several times a days with baking soda in water, they wouldn't hurt as much and would get somewhat better. Alcohol can actually make mouth sores worse. Then, I read online that fluoride can aggravate mouth sores. I switched to a touch past without fluoride, but with Tee tree and Neem. Both are good for bacteria. I use Desert essence toothpaste with tea tree oil. Within 2 days of switching to this toothpaste, the sores started to heal and then went away. They have been gone for 4 months and never came back.

@158839446 I've been taking an 80 mg dose of Tagrisso for a year and a half and I take it in the morning with my other supplements, because nobody told me not to. No nausea, and some diarrhea at first, but that subsided. I had one mouth sore last year, and my hair has changed texture so it's frizzier and curlier than before. My primary side effect is fatigue. So sorry to learn of others' more serious issues with this medication.
