Bp meds adverse effects

Posted by cher1947 @cher1947, Jun 28, 2025

I have been on 3 blood pressure medicines for about 5 years. They are Toprol XL,50 amlodopine besylate and 100mg. Losartan. Since January I have intentionally lost 39 lbs since diagnosed with prediabetes. After this I have had many adverse reactions. Shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, aching all over, depression and anxiety. Wondering if meds could cause this. Have had all kinds of bloodwork, Ct scans, everything comes back normal. Do have acid reflux. Could u give opinion?

You could try a calcium channel blocker (I use verapamil) I had problems with all those other bp meds too. But the verapamil works fine with 0 side effects (as far as I can tell)

Lisinopril did terrible things to me.
Dizziness, depression, ideations of suicide, shortness of breath, just to name a few.
Nasty stuff. I won't ever take it again.

I went in for a L4 nerve pinch & because my BP was 157 over 117 they put me Lisinopril along with stuff for my pinched nerve. Since using up everything for my back I'm only taking the Lisinopril & its got ALL MESSED UP. Just about every side effect you listed along with cold feet & uncontrollable sweating. I'm DONE with doctors! I've literally had every test done & high BP is all I have going on & since switching to a red meat & carbs diet I dropped 50lbs in 35 days & I've felt fantastic until I started taking this crap.

There are many alternatives available to Lisinopril. At that BP I'm not surprised with the reaction from Dr's. That BP is what I have been living with for over 40 years and I'm still waiting for the stroke I have been promised. Even on lisinopril I still run above 150/100 daily, spiking to 240/140 regularly and damage is being done to the body. I'm intolerant of all BP and diabetic medication and am sick of being told I have to suck it up. Easy for them to say when they are not within arms reach when I react with physical aggression from their medicating me, lucky them! I understand the problems I face with high BP and glucose levels but the side effects are more crippling than the cure for me. I should suffer from the side effects of medication in order to address the symptoms of my health! Next thing I'll be given more medication to counter the previous medication side effects which is supposed to counter the one before it. Seems there is a medication for everything but comfortable living.
I'm taking 5mg of Lisinopril currently, which does nothing for my BP but stops the 24/7 migraines I get when off it, there is underlying aggression with this small dose which I usually manage to suppress, but not always.
Interestingly I'm trialing the last know diabetic medication for me, a new one, which has increased my BP by 8%, not a lot until you factor in I'm way over the desired level anyway.
Curiously when I'm off medication I generally feel better myself, I guess the body has adapted to these high figures something medicine can't factor in. Believe me doing nothing is doing damage to your body despite feeling good, it is only superficial. One day you will realise it is too late to do anything, the damage is done. I can't undo the damage, just try to arrest the progress is all I can do, unsuccessfuly for the moment.
I would suggest trying different BP meds as you are likely to fnd one that suits. I'm way outside the norm for medication, yet I still try new meds incase I crack the side effects. You don't know until you try, there is always hope one will stick.
Cheers

I'm sorry to hear that. Especially since my doc has me taking Lisinopril while recovering from stroke a month ago, and my BP has been extremely high. Taking 20mg.
Plus half a 25mg Metoprolol tablet. BP coming down slowly, but still high.
Anyone else have experience with these? Trying to prevent another stroke...

People with low renin levels taking Lisinopril can experience a rise in blood pressure. This happened to me, the higher the dose the higher my blood pressure went. Maybe you should be tested.

I had low blood pressure until last year at 73. I was prescribed IC Olmesartan Medoxomil 20mg. I don’t remember side effects but after 4 weeks when I was checked blood pressure was good but borderline so the med was increased to 40mg. Started having strong palpitations, sense of pressure in my body, severe indigestion and coughing. The palpitations and sense of pressure always occurred at rest and twice they woke me up. I have an Apple Watch which frequently suggested I could have afib. Ended up seeing a cardiologist, he changed the Olmesartan back to 20mg and added Amlodipine 5mg. I had echos and heart monitor, everything was fine, I do have a mitral valve prolapse, very minor which was discovered after I gave birth when I was 40. After being on the new meds for about 4 weeks the heart palpitations and pressure started but the symptoms were 50% less and no severe indigestion, still not good. Primary doctor eliminated the Olmesartan and changed to Amlodipine 10mg. In 4 weeks 3-4 episodes, palpitations were very minor and the sense of pressure in my body only lasted 2-3 hours and not as strong. Currently on Losartan 25mg and after 2 weeks I had very weak palpitations and sense of body pressure. What’s interesting is the the side effects are always at rest and between 3-5pm, late afternoon.
I go to the gym 2 days a week and Pilates once during the week. Always feel great after work outs. Most of my episodes have occur on Tuesdays(gym day) and Saturdays which is errand day and food shopping. Doctor thinks I am sensitive to blood pressure medication, see the cardiologist in October which will be a year since I started BPM. You would start to think that high activity is responsible, but it doesn’t explain why these episodes never happened on other days at the gym or Pilates. I guess the good news is that my blood pressure is stable and my bloodwork is perfect. Never been on many medications, very healthy so I am shock that this is occurring.🤨

When I was on Amlodipine, 10mg it gave me indigestion. Issues with my stomach since I was 17, nothing serious, been taking simethicone for over 50 years. So far I have been on 3 BP meds and they all caused an increase in indigestion. Can be a side effect for many BP meds.

My Mayo pharmacist specialist (went through and hour meeting to go over all my medications and supplements) stated I should take my medications and supplements with food except for medication specifically requiring empty stomach and/or no food.

If you have access to doing this interface I would suggest it. Mayo Jacksonville offers it and I learned a lot. I was taken off about 1/2 dozen supplements saying would interfere with my medications. I had no idea it was an issue.

You mentioned indigestion so maybe taking with food could help. I know I take Mexiletine and it can cause nausea and indigestion if not taken with food. My medical doctors said this is an individual thing as for some no indigestion and for some like me indigestion.

We are all individuals and what will bother one person will not bother another. So I take the mexiletine with food and no indigestion.

If you have access to doing a pharmacist visit to go over all your medications and supplement I would strongly suggest that. It really helped me. My insurance (Medicare) covered it.

Everyone is different, I have been battling indigestion for 56 years, most of the time it’s manageable. Once I started taking OLMESARTAN I was popping tums after every meal, thinking I would be seeing a GI specialist again. As it turns out, once off OLMESARTAN my GI system was better. OLMESARTAN is an ARB, Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and LOSARTAN is an ARB. When I was on Amlodipine indigestion was sporadic and same results on LOSARTAN. You are correct about vitamins, I took one berberine supplement and 4 hours later I had heart palpitations while on Amlodipine. I believe if you are taking Amlodipine and calcium supplements it should be 2 hours apart.
The only supplement I am now taking is for my eyes and vitamin D, dropped milk thistle and calcium supplements since TUMS has calcium. So, for me, the biggest issue is eliminating the heart palpitations/pressure. When I recently had an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon to replace my partial knee replacement to a full he looked at my chart and saw that I was on my third BPM, he stated that I am probably sensitive to BPM, same position my primary care doctor is taking. Will be interesting when I see the Cardiologist again. Tough getting old and having GI issues before medication doesn’t help.😀
