Low blood pressure and dizziness upon standing

Posted by stonemountain47 @stonemountain47, Jun 1, 2025

I'm 77 years old and 6'7" tall. 250 lbs. Most of my life since reaching full height I have occasionally experienced "head rushes" as I used to call it, which can also be called "light-headedness" or dizziness. For the past 8 months this began happening more frequently until now in the last 2 months it happens nearly every time I stand up from prolonged sitting. I have never fainted from it, but I usually have to put my head below my heart to stop the dizziness. Sometimes it lasts for 5 minutes or so even after sitting down.

Last October I was asked by my cardiologist to track and report to my portal account my blood pressure and pulse. Original reason was that my pulse was getting dangerously slow while sleeping (with a heart monitor on for 7 days it got down to 26 bpm with one pause of 5.1 seconds between beats). This eventually led to getting a pacemaker installed in March. With this taken care of, as well as my getting shocked out of AFIB in February and my heart failure ending a month later, I was declared generally OK.

But, my blood pressure ranges low to severely low. Common for me is 105/80, which is just fine. Not common, but also not infrequent, are bp's of 73/56 +/- 5 for both systolic and diastolic. I have lots of friends who have been dealing with high blood pressure for many years, but I've not known anyone with low blood pressure challenges accompanied by dizziness.

I'm looking for help understanding why the dizziness and low BP. Recommendations?

Thanks.
Bill

I have the same problem. My doctor says I should sit for a moment on the edge of the chair or bed before standing slowly. This does definitely help.

@midwesterner49
I do this from sitting and when I get up from bed. I sit a moment at the side of bed or edge of a chair like you do but then I swing my legs back and forth. This seems to really help. Just have to remember to do it but my body lets me know when I forget when I stand.

Hi
I rock in bed and this helps me to get up.
Lucky I am long in the body!
Still on Diltiazem 120 CD HDL for AF rapid and persistent, I had to stop my 2.5 Bisoprolol as BP low @ 99/50

HI,
I AM A 86 YEAR OLD, 5'8 -135 LB FEMALE. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. GET UP OR TURN TO FAST AND THE FLOOR SAYS HELLO. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH LOW MAGNESIUM. I HAVE BEEN TAKING IT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND MY BLOOD PRESSURE STAYS AT A NORMAL BUT LOW RATE. 106 TO 111 OVER 67 TO 74. I STILL HAVE TO BE CAREFUL, BUT THE DIZZINESS IS MUCH LESS MAYBE MAGNESIUM COULD HELP YOU WITH YOUR PROBLEM

@mzpat what kind of magnesium do you take glycanate or what kind? I get low blood pressure about 90/60 that makes me dizzy for a day or two seems like it's been happening since menopause and it would happen once every month or two now it's happening once every couple of weeks after about 10 years after menopause.. the doctors just seem to push me along and not really do anything about it and I've tried the binders and the socks and everything else the only thing I won't try is the midadrine medication they wanted to put me on so I'd like to try the magnesium

Have you tried an abdominal binder and compression socks? Also make your own hydrating drink you can use water and a pinch of Celtic Sea salt put a little lemon in it for potassium and put one of those sugar packets in it there's a recipe on the internet to make your own electrolyte drink.. maybe some of those things will help you.. I suffer from the dizziness also but mine will last all day sometimes 2 days and my hands and feet get super cold and the doctor's pretty much just have ignored it and tried to put me on medication which I don't want but there's lots of reasons you could have it and I would have a doctor investigate whether it's a hydration issue or something else

I have a question about statin. My hubby has just been put on it for high cholesterol. He is awaiting test results for a supposed mini stroke. Since being on it, only a week, Ive seen a decline in his cognitive health, forgetting basic things..It could be the results of the supposed mini stroke, but Ive read so much about statin and its affect on the arteries with plaque, its hard to know what's fact and fiction.

@ginniwin One side effect of statins can be what people describe as "brain fog." Given that he just had a mini-stroke, I'd probably suspect that first. But of course he should see the doctor.

HI JAYNE,I TAKE A "NATURE MADE" JUST PLAIN MAGNESIUM 250MG. I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH LOW BLOOD PRESSURE. MY DOCTOR HAD ME CHECK MY SALT INTAKE. I HAD BEEN NOT USING SALT BECAUSE OF WATER RETENTION. I INCREASED MY SALT INTAKE - NOT BY MUCH- AND MY BLOOD PRESSURE IS STAYING AT 114-118 OVER 66 - 73. AND NO PROBLEMS WITH WATER RETENTION. THAT HAS BEEN FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS. CURRENTLY I AM 87 AND DO NOT TAKE ANY MEDICATIONS. I FOUND THAT A LOT OF THE MEDICATIONS CREATE MORE PROBLEMS THAN THEY HELP WITH WHAT THEY ARE PRESCRIBED FOR. I ALSO USE DRUGS.COM ON THE INTERNET. THAT SITE GIVES VERY COMPLETE INFORMATION ABOUT DRUGS.
I HOPE YOU CAN FIND A DR THAT CAN HELP WITH YOUR PROBLEM. I WENT THRU 5 BEFORE I FOUND A NURSE PRACTIONER THAT LISTENED TO ME AND HELPED.GOOD LUCKPAT On Sunday, July 19, 2026 at 04:28:16 PM CDT, Mayo Clinic Connect wrote:

@jaynesavage0 The salt and sugar raise red flags for me, I once asked my cardiologist about hydrating drinks, and it was a definite 'no." Plain water. Seltzer. I am glad that your homemade hydrating drink works well for you, but you are still experiencing dizziness and extremity coldness. If your doctor shrugs it off, I suggest seeking another opinion.

@walkinggirl I don't have a problem with high blood pressure or diabetes so it's no problem for me to put a little salt and sugar in my drink
