Afraid it the treatment meds for osteoporosis

Posted by mahonlye @mahonlye, Oct 23, 2025

I’m 68 with latest spine score of-37. My body type is very thin with BMI 19- but I eat extremely healthy diet and do excellent exercise every day - no falls. I have no other health issues so dont need to take medications. I’m totally petrified to take any of the medications I’ve been told I need for treatment of osteoporosis. I don’t know what to do! I know breaking bones will be awful but I’m so weary of these poisons they want to put in my body.

exactly the same situation last test my hip femoral was finally in the osteoporosis category - 2.9 i'd been in osteopenia all the other times yet stranglely the doctor had immediately said - this while I was still below 2.5 , that Evenity "would be a lovely drug for you." LOVELY? She apparently never read the black box warning.

I'm a little worried because my life has been such that I haven't been able to exercise all the time - among other things broke a toe running into something in AUgust, don't think it was osteoporosis related but it kept me from working out for a month - plus lots of stress which I know isn't great for it either.

I'm ready to get those two tests , CTX and the one w the P, just so I can see what's going on before doing the test.

So Laura
I just saw this.
All strontium is basically the same. What changes is the company and the standards, additives and price.
AOR has a great agency to oversee their product in Canada, and they have few if any additives. Pure Encapsulations Strontium Citrate also has few if any additives.
Vitacost has a great price point.
But there are lots of strontium brands which are good products.

You are the best judge of what works for you and only you may decide that.
Research is a different matter though.
You are mistaken when you say that strontium displaces calcium in the bone. It is more accurate to say that strontium has the capacity to bridge the large osteoporic gaps in the bone and then calcium adheres and then bone grows.
You seem to imply that strontium has a part in cardio events.
Strontium Citrate has never been tied in any study to cardio events.
Strontium is found in much of the world's ground water and in some areas of the world is found in high concentrations. If strontium was a cause of any heart conditions then those areas would have shown a definite change in cardio events. In the history of the world, no such population study or research has ever shown a problem in those areas with high strontium content in their ground water.
You may be alluding to that one population study, which has never been able to be reproduced, which showed a rise of cardio events in the population of those on strontium ranelate, people who also had existing cardio problems. Other population studies which eliminated existing heart patients found no tie of even SR to cardio events. Denmark studied the SR for a year and found no tie to cardio events.
Still, it is always best to be safe:
Evenity, prolia and Forteo all have ties to some type of cardio event. In addition, calcium supplementation has also been associated with cardio events.
Strontium citrate has never been associated with any cardio events.

Thanks for your info. I’m getting skittish as I get older because, it seems, I get yet another malady after another -autoimmune. .
It would be great if more studies were done on strontium to clarify.

My spine was -3.1 (t-score) at age 60. That is considered "severe" osteoporosis. I have currently competed 1 year of tymlos with no side effects. My grandmother had multiple spinal fractures so I knew first-hand how debilitating and painful fracturing one's spine could be. Some of the most popular osteoporosis drugs have been around for 10-20+ years so the side-effects are well known. For me, the choice between fracturing my spine, or dealing with side-effects was clear. My doctor said that every person she has ever met who experienced a fracture due to osteoporosis regretted not considering drugs as a preventive measure.

Unfortunately, I had to consider and take osteoporosis meds. At 63, I experienced 3 compression fractures in 2 months that were misdiagnosed as neuropathy for 6 months. My spine was -3.7. Reluctantly, after much research, I took Evenity for a year. Currently, I took my second infusion of Reclast with very few side effects from either drug. My spine improved to -2.9 after a year on Evenity. Next year the bone scan should reveal how well the Reclast has worked. I’m not sure what my next steps will be. I too worry about all the potential side effects, but I also worry about ending up in a wheelchair or with more fractures. My mother had osteoporosis and fractured a hip and wrist. I was a former distance runner and have exercised throughout my life, recovered from stress fractures, etc., yet here I am. I have consulted with one orthopedic doctor and one endocrinologist who both believe that I will need bone meds for life. However, I remain hopeful that I may be able to leave these meds behind. ☘️

@shamrock24 Congratulations on the improvement of your spinal bone density on Evenity. I got a t-score of 3.1 at 60 for my spine, and have accepted I will probably be cycling on/off bone meds for the rest of my life. The alternative is not pretty - chronic pain, wheelchair, or worse.

@roseincalifornia You have a DEXA coming up, right? I think you may be quite surprised at the results. Let us know.

@njx58 I got my results!

I am pretty happy with them. Not sure what my next course will be next year after I finish tymlos, but I am seeing a new endocrinologist next week.

@roseincalifornia Excellent! -2.4 in the spine is a great result. You should get a little more gain going forward, but it won't be nearly as much as this. Some doctors will stop Tymlos at 18 months because it's no longer doing much - but that's OK! You are out of the woods.

If you're not doing so yet, start exercising.

@sl303 I think they removed the black box warning. After years of additional studies, according to my rheumatologist, they have found that the incidence of osteosarcoma is not greater in the group taking Evenity than the general population. I was on Forteo for two years and had great improvement in my spine, but not my hips. I'm now on Evenity to see if I can get hip improvement. I just hate the side effects of ALL the osteoporosis medications!!!

@ou14mejc I'm going to have to "back up" on this post....my apologies. It was actually teriparatide (Forteo) that had the black box warning for osteosarcoma, not Evenity. The black box warning has been removed. I believe cardiovascular events are the most serious side effect with Evenity. Sorry I got that mixed up....I finished two years of Forteo with no major side effects. I've only had two Evenity infusions.
