Traumatic Brain Injury: Come introduce yourself

Welcome to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people who know first-hand about living with a traumatic brain injury. Together we can learn from each other and share stories about challenges and triumphs, setbacks and the things that help.

Pull up a chair and connect. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

New- had a fall/concussion 1/30/26. Think I may be having pcs. Husband says he tells me things and I don't remember it at all. I also am having a harder time remembering new information and learning new stuff. More forgetful, but Im also post menopausal and 63. How can I tell the difference.

Hi @sdokie - hello, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You point out a legitimate question about how to tell what is age or life stage, and what is due to traumatic injury.

I'm assuming you mean post-concussion syndrome, as you posted this in the context of the Traumatic Brain Injury group? I'm asking as there are so many acronyms in medicine and want to be sure we are all discussing the same thing.

Have you had the chance to discuss this forgetfulness with your primary care physician at all? If so, what did he or she say?

Hi All. Kevin here from Grand Marais. Good to chat this morning with others who know what it is like.
My experience is chainsaw/tree related. I am told that a branch bounced up and hit me. I remember starting to cut the branch, then woke up 6 hrs. later in a HCMC. Thankfully I was not home when it happened as I'm 2 hrs. from the nearest trauma center. Both bones in my left forearm and both jaws broken in addition to the TBI. Why is a 66 year old guy running a chainsaw? Because I can. I finally bought a replacement last week, It got wrecked too.
I feel fortunate because even though "full" recovery is still a long way off, I can do most anything I want to do. I went roller blading about a month ago and I have bought my season pass for Lutsen Ski Area. I can't do anything as fast as I used to, But I can do it!
Hopefully you all will too.

My son was in a car accident and suffered a TBI. He was in a coma for weeks and the hospital and nursing home for over a year. That was almost 30 years ago. We had to teach him to talk, walk, toilet train him. Teach him how to smile He was 22. He is doing well. He has works at UPS been married 26 years and has a son. I won’t lie it hasn’t been easy but so worth it. Patience is a virtue

@nrdl2879 - thanks for sharing your son's story. As a mom, I would feel very scared if one of my children was in a coma for weeks, and then in the hospital and a nursing home for a long time. That, along with having to teach him how to do everything all over again, would require extreme patience and love.

Glad to hear he is doing well, employed, married and has a child. Sounds like he has come an amazingly long way.

What helped you to get through the past 30 years since this occurred?

@lisalucier I always compared myself to a hamster on a wheel. If i quit running on the wheel my son would fall off too

Let my son act like he is 10 years old when he needs to. Luckily he is easy going. Some TBI patients can be mean and ornery

Now i am caregiving for my husband who has stage 4 colon cancer and found out last year i have bone marrow cancer.
Just enjoying everyday
