I was the first person to have the awake procedure done at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville to repair my aneurysm. Many thanks to Dr Tawk and Dr Q for all u do for your patients

I found out I had a 7mm aneurysm 3 years ago took about 3 months for me to get fully diagnosed before Stanford University recommended that I have surgery within the next week. It's super frightening at first but you're going to be fine. They'll do additional tests to map outthe size and location, create a 3d model of it and what the best treatment option is. I will say I had to go to 2 neurologists before I found one that recommended me to see a surgeon they all have different thresholds. I was lucky, my surgeon Dr Steinberg at Stanford. He's one of the best in the field the surgery wasn't great but I was mountain biking 2 months later and haven't had a single symptom since and it was a full craniotomy. Of course I'm having surgery at the Mayo Clinic in July for two heart aneurysms but that's another story. You will be fine, ask questions, read real journal articles not the BS on the web.

What’s important things in life is discovering the trouble in early stages of disease. In USA, medical treatment is very advantageous and minimal damage. You have chosen great hospitals for your treatments. Your surgery will be very successful. Tainan

I had aneurysm clipping at 7mm. It depends upon the shape of the aneurysm. My was very irregular and likely to burst. I won the jackpot though, I also have an assending and root aorta aneurysm. Having surgery for that in 3 weeks. The recovery from open brain surgery actually not too bad at all. Not looking forward to open heart surgery.

I had a 5.1 ascending AA found incidentally 2 months ago. Self-referred to Mayo Phx after Banner Tucson CT surgeon told me they don't operate below 5.5 cm, wasn't interested in research about ascending AAs in long-term endurance athletes, could give no guidance for endurance activities while waiting 6 months to check it again. Impressed with Mayo cardiologist who has referred me to Dr. Sell-Dottin for surgery so very reassuring to find your post with raves about her. I am 67, very fit and active, and do not see any reason to wait as the window for enjoying a very active lifestyle is shrinking. My awareness of the aneurysm has zapped joy from exertional activity and I want it all in the rear view mirror as soon as possible. Is that crazy? Curious if you considered any other surgeon at Mayo or elsewhere before scheduling with Sell-Dottin.

I just found out two days ago I have a small brain aneurysm near my optic nerve and have to wait weeks to see a neurosurgeon. They didn’t tell me anything to do or not to do to prevent rupture . I like to go hear bands and play VR games and I’m not sure if I can do either of those . Or even take Tylenol for headaches… feeling frustrated. Does anyone know ?

@haileypeytmom - just wanted to check in and see if you got to see the neurosurgeon? If so, how did that go?

What is the awake procedure?

I had a ruptured brain aneurysm 4 years ago, it was coiled during emergency surgery. I also have an internal carotid artery dissection (on the opposite side). I take low dose aspirin for the dissection. I have been told taking NSAIDS is not a safe option for me other than one or two, every once in while. I have read that red light therapy increases blood flow and lowers inflammation and I am wondering if there is a risk for me to use it on my face/scalp. Unfortunately I am not confident with the answer I received from my neurologist which was "no risk that I have heard of". I was hoping they would have more information or active research.

@k8e - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am glad you were able to get the ruptured aneurysm coiling done in emergency surgery. That is already a lot, not to mention you also said you have an internal carotid artery dissection (on the opposite side).

I moved your post here to this existing discussion about brain aneurysm so you could connect with others:

Hoping that here you can connect with @annieboo @haileypeytmom @cacamik @tainan and others who may have input related to red light therapy to increase blood flow and lower inflammation, and any risks to your face and scalp with this.
