Metropolol after ablation.

Posted by amu45sin @amu45sin, May 10, 2025

Amu45sin here.
Had ablation 4 weeks ago. Prior to that was on 12.5 mg metropolol succinate for 6 weeks. Doctor has me me off metropolol now. Have others been taken off? What effects did you have? Thanks!

Did you have the ablation procedure and now you are able to stop the metropol? How did the procedure go for you? Was the recovery smooth? Thank you. DB

PS. I just started a low dose of the metropol and do t like the side effects.

@doriba Just had an ablation for SVT yesterday. The procedure was quite uneventful from my patient perspective. I thought I was out for most of the procedure but turns out they used twilight anesthesia, and said I was awake and alert and participating the whole time. I have zero memory of that 😁. After-surgery recovery was pretty simple, had no incision pain and a sore-muscles ache in my chest. Tylenol took care of that. Went home that day. Second day, today, very little discomfort, don't even need Tylenol. Now it's wait and see time. Dr is quite optimistic that he zapped out the rogue cells, time will tell!

@osgilian
I'm just reading your post today 4/1/26. It doesn't say if you had your ablation in 2025 or 2026. I am wondering how you are progressing.
I had an ablation for SVT and PVC but I am still getting both, so I opted to stay on Metoprolol since I still have an arrhythmia.
I had my ablation in August of 2025. My doctor was optimistic that both problems would be corrected, but they weren't. The palpitations are much less severe than before, but they are not gone.

@bch72 Sorry about that. My ablation was in March 2026, so I'm in the "blanking" period. No svt episodes , but time will tell. I'm still getting a few PACs a day, but nothing particularly bothersome at this time. I'm still on metoprolol but will be discussing tapering at my follow-up visit on April 23. I notice that my sleeping heart rate has dropped into the low 60's/ high 50's, which is lower than pre-ablation. I don't know if there's a cause and effect with the ablation. I will also check in on that at my follow-up visit.

@osgilian Thanks for your speedy reply. That low heart rate is probably from the PVCs. They usually wait 3 months for a final decision on whether the outcome was successful but I think their (the surgeons) criteria are different from what yours or mine would be.
I was hoping to feel better after my ablation, but I don't.
Do you mind if I ask your age? That probably has a lot to do with it.

@bch72 I just turned 73. I've had svt and PACs since I was a teenager, but the svt was easily managed until about 5 months ago.

@osgilian I cannot be certain, but there's a hefty chance your lower resting HR is due to the influence of metoprolol. Your heart is calming, but so are YOU. Less anxiety, less adrenaline because you aren't fibrillating/getting so many triplets or runs of PACs [which can feel like AF], so your Vagal tone is better and your heart rate is lower on that account as well. It would be interesting to see if it climbs up nearer to your former 'normal rate' once your taper is over. Would you consider coming back and letting us know what it goes in general, but also if you notice that your RHR is pretty much back to the same level as before?
