Treatment & Travel: Please offer your opinion
I am struggling with the decision if should I cancel my 2 week hiking trip to Slovenia in early September.
I plan to start SBRT, with Lupron, in early June. I will probably get my 6 month Lupron shot then. One month later, in late June, the 5 radiation sessions. I am 74 yo in excellent health.
From those with experience, do you think I will be able to do the 10 day, 5 mile (slow) a day, hiking trip? The longest leg of the plane ride is 9 hours. I been planning for a year!
I guess my main concerns are fatigue, hot flashes and urgency in elimination.
I understand that everyone reacts differently, but I want to go on my trip but I also want to be able to enjoy it!
Thanks in advance

I say GO FOR IT! My radiation issues were none at all. The ADT can be another story. I'm a bit more tired and the hot flashes are kinda annoying but not a huge deal. I walk between 3-4 miles everyday myself and it's a rather brisk pace. You can do it!!!! You won't regret it, but that's just my humble opinion. 🙂
Good luck man!!!

2 ReactionsYou should have plenty of time to recover from SBRT. It usually causes some urinary issues, Taking Flomax can almost always resolve those problem in a short time
Are you having a barrier like SpaceOAR, Barrigel, or BioProtect put in so that it can protect your rectum.
My brother had almost identical procedure to yours at 77, After three months, he was doing just fine. He was getting some hot flashes, but it wasn’t debilitating.
Yes, it’s true that some people can have some pretty serious side effects but it is a very small percentage. If you’re in good enough shape that you can do that kind of hike now then doing it in September shouldn’t be a problem.

3 Reactionswell dont have to make the decision today but I would say book it..( but with cancellation insurance) and you will prob know a few weeks out from trip date if you feel like it. If you are in good health, I suspect you will do fine and more importantly, I think it is good to not let PC interrupt your life too much...stay active. my biggest fear of anything is to become bed ridden..dont want to see that happen to anyone..so plan on making everything a GO !

1 Reaction@dpayton Thank you! That is great news about you walking daily - so I can too
@jeffmarc Yes, Barrigel. I want to do under local anesthesia, at the same time as markers, but doc is pushing for general. I have a high tolerance to pain

1 Reaction@xahnegrey40 Booked a year ago. I won't lose too much money if I cancel before June. No trip insurance, sadly... I like your thinking

1 ReactionI flew to South America eight weeks after having brachytherapy and five weeks of IMRT. At the time of travel, I was five months into Orgovyx therapy too. Like you, I was concerned about my ability to travel. And, during treatment, wondered if I'd have to eat the trip costs (everything had been paid for). I'm glad that I didn't cancel my trip. Sure, I was a little more draggy, had hot flashes, and had to pee more frequently than usual, but the side effects of treatment weren't a deal breaker. I repeated the same itinerary this year, and admittedly, it was a hell of a lot easier. I'm glad that I went last year though. One thing for sure, you can't buy your life back.

5 ReactionsYes, the time frame you give allows for plenty of time to adjust to the effects of ADT and your radiation treatment. If you stay active through all your treatment as you should, then you will be able to do that hiking trip no problem at all. You will likely get a little more tired than usual but not to the extent that you would rather not do it at all.
