New HCM diagnosis. Worst symptom is mucus buildup. Is this normal?

I am a 74 year old female with HCM.
For about 4 years I have developed a throat condition that drives me nuts- and my husband too. I constantly have to clear my throat and it feels like I have a rope of something that I need to clear out. My voice sounds gravely also. I went to an EMT to have it checked and no help there.
Last week I was looking it up and found information on LPR reflux. It recommended using a humidifier, sleeping on a wedge so I’m raised up, taking Pepcid morning and night and sipping water to keep my throat moist. Plus other things.
I’m on day 3 and it seems to be helping. Also, slippery elm lozenges which haven’t come on Amazon yet.
I looked it all up on Chat GPT.
Since it irritates the throat, it might take 2 months for the vocal cords to heal from all the throat clearing.

Being recently diagnosed with HOCM can be overwhelming at first, so learning as much as you can is a good thing.
How wonderful you have conference call with the Cardiology Department at the Mayo coming up! Have you had a chance to read the many posts here about cough/phlegm and HCM? There seems to be a correlation to each other.
Is this one of the questions you plan to ask on your conference call? My advice is to be prepared before this call and have your list of questions. You want to make the most of this valuable phone call and get as much information as possible.

Do you have your symptoms of HCM under better control? Have the medications you take been helpful?

I never experienced what you describe, it is clear that others have. How has HCM affected your life? What made you seek medical advice which resulted in your diagnosis? I am doing well and do not have any major issues. Everything is good overall. However, I have some swelling in my legs. I am taking Dytor Plus 5 mg tablet daily (half tablet), and I am also managing my fluid intake as advised by my doctor.

Apart from that, everything is fine.

So interesting that your note is what I am seeing this morning. After a night of coughing, I put it down to maybe a cold coming on but never would have considered there's a correlation between my HCM and the coughing. I'm also a multiple sneezer (up to 12 sneezes in a row) and when I cough, I end up having a sneezing fit. Could there be a correlation?
I've been on Camzyos for about 10 months and have been very happy with the results. My energy levels have vastly improved and I've been believing that there have been no side effects. Could plegm buildup be a possible side effect?

I have the phelgm, as well. It feels like a small ball in my throat and cough clears it for a time. Sneezing is another symptom, but not sure if it is related to HCM?

@cornish I'm also a 78 yr old female. Was diagnosed with OHC in Sept of last year. I have the coughing at night for a long time, but thought it was from allergies and maybe COPD. My heart specialist told me there are 4 stages, and I was in the last stage, so my OHC is bad. I started Camzyos 4 days ago, and last night I had no coughing up of the frothy phlegm. My energy level is also up. The reason I didn't start Camzyos earlier was because I had other issues, a spot in my breast, mammograms, biopsy, plus a biopsy in ear. My husband also had knee replacement in Oct, and was busy with him. I was afraid of side effects from Camzyos, but wish I had started it sooner, as it's been great for me, so far. I have read wonderful comments on Camzyos, and a few that have said it stops working for them after awhile. I pray I'm not one of those. My doctor has told me to drink plenty of water, as it helps the heart to stay fluffy. I am also on 12.5 mg of Metoprolol daily. I was really afraid of Camzyos, as it has the Black box warnings, but I knew if I didn't take it, I wouldn't be here long. I also didn't want to have the open heart surgery (can't remember the name of that), but anyway felt I really wasn't in the condition to make it through that. I am really happy with Camzyos so far. Already way more energy too. Best of luck to you.

@dinahj I am so glad to read that Camzyos is working well for you, and I hope it continues to do so. We are all different and the Camzyos patients each have their own unique story. You have an open mind about the noted side effects (if 1 person in the trials had a certain side effect, it's listed), and the possibility that it will cease to work after a time (my cardiologist has said that is noted in the literature). The surgery is called a septal myectomy, I was 3 weeks from my 76th birthday when I had mine at Mayo - so glad I did. You have a full plate with all of your other concerns. Nevertheless, I hope that Camzyos works well for you permanently!
