Does anyone feel old and useless with age?

Posted by sally12345 @sally12345, Sep 13, 2023

Hi, I'm almost 64.. I'm feeling old and useless. My strength isn't good anymore. Like it used to be mainly side effects of meds. My health is poor with cvsd. Osteoporosis, poor circulation, hearing , eyesight, you name it's going. I always took care of myself. Now I've gotten older and everything's wrong, my grandkids don't a want me around and they are little still. No friends to talk with or do things with. Why is it we spend our lifetime taking care of family. Loving friends to end up , old and tired. Useless.

Lucky, I am older at 72. Do you mind if I ask if you are suffering from possible a incurable disease. The reason I ask is because, I was diagnosed with cancer at 64. I am very grateful for the time sometimes. Funny cat 44, You make any age think.

I have never done this before, I feel the same way. I remember the last time I ran and played with my grandchildren. It was 8 years ago.

For anyone feeling old and useless, dig deep into yourself and do what makes you happy or feel fulfilled. There are days when life feels less fulfilling, but it usually passes. Our world is not like it was when we grew up-so many choices now. It seems scary at times, but keep preserving to find your meaning in life!

I'm 66, I don't think that is really old. I feel like no one cares what I think, say or feel. I keep up with current events, am pretty good with new technology, worked about 30 years in a science field. I'm included in the family chat group (4 grown kids and husband), but if I make a comment or respond to someone, no one answers or even reacts. I feel irrelevant. I was interested in getting involved in some community issues, but now feel that I have nothing useful to contribute. I'm thinking about asking the family to just remove me from the message group. I feel worthless.

Hi Lylii,
That is too bad that you are experiencing these feelings of not being noticed. How sad! That's terrible and very impolite of those doing it. And, you are right. 66 is not old! I'd love to be 66 again! I'm going to be 80 in May. I have noticed some of the same things that you are going through. People don't want to talk much to what they consider "old" people. It seems to be the way of the world these days. Younger people only want to be with themselves. You sound very interesting with all of your background and interests! I would love to talk with you! I think you would be very interesting! Pursue the involvement in the community like you wanted to do. Possibly be involved with a senior community in some way. Seniors have more manners because they were raised that way. I remember my Mom and my Grandmother making me be polite to people when I was young. Leaving the family group who ignore you; even though that's your own children, might just be a good wake up call for them. Maybe they will ask you to return and change their ways. Also with families do remind them that you won't always be there for them in any way. Families tend to sometimes forget that we all die. My husband died in 2024 and I'm so glad that we had 30 wonderful years together! Even though I know he's up in Heaven and we'll eventually be reunited in God's time, it's very lonely for me without him. And, it will be for your loved ones and friends when you are gone too. They need to think about that and include you more.

Prayer helps also. Just talk to God like he's your best friend and he is! He'll straigten all of this mess out for you. It states in the Bible; (I may be wrong but I think it's in the Book of Matthew) "He knows of all your needs." I'll say a prayer for you also.
I wish you the best.

If you haven't already, please share your feelings of hurt with them. Then ask that they respond when you share thoughts and experiences. They might not have a clue that you are hurt and that you need this. Good luck.
