Is there a supplement that really works?

Posted by debbik @debbik, Nov 14, 2024

I was diagnosed 6 years ago with osteoporosis. I thought I was doing everything possible to build bone density but my latest bone density showed it got worse by 6%. I am taking a supplement called ‘bone-up’ which is supposed to be natural and has StimuCal. I’m wondering if there are better supplements out there that really help? Has anyone seen positive bone density results? If so, I would love to know what you are taking and doing. By the way, I’m 65, and try to be fairly active. Thank you.

@nycmusic I did some reading on this when I learned that the old advice to eat spinach for calcium is now known to be wrong.

The below video (by 2 Canadian doctors) briefly describes spinach as fairly bad for calcium. But other sources (sorry, I did not save the references) said that spinach was believed to be only neutral for calcium. They suggested that spinach contains only enough oxalates to neutralize its own calcium, but not other calcium that you might take. The video below still says to eat lots leafy greens like spinach, but pair with calcium from elsewhere, as you mention in your post.

@nycmusic thanks…everything in moderation…. Micromanaging diet is not fun…though kidney patients are among those who have to be ultra-careful.

The only supplements i think with studies to improve bone are the high dose Vitamin K MK4 along with D/calcium. Vitamin K is important to direct calcium to bones.

The strontium boost from Algae cal seemed to make me itchy. Had terrible hives. I am afraid to start the Algae Cal again (without the strontium boost) as I have read that there are trace amounts of strontium in the regular algae cal.

I have been taking natural supplements for about 2 years. Last year my dexascan showed a 12% overall improvement and I was moved from Osteoporosis to osteopenia. Had a dexascan today and will post the results when I receive them. I can say I don't have bone pain anymore and muscle spasms are almost all gone. If this scan comes back good I'm going to see if I can play pickleball again.

@pking1952 What supplements were you taking that resulted in a 12% improvement?

So glad it helped. Yes the book is great but can be overwhelming. The collagen thing is interesting and not many people know that. I’m a scientist and even I didn’t know. He’s really helped me to figure out what in my case I need to be doing. He’s very down to earth.

If you can share his interview with any women friends who aren’t using the Mayo site, maybe we can help more women.

Best of luck to you and your bones - Teri

Just had my dexa scan yesterday and my results are still showing
improvement from last year. I'm taking a supplement by Professional
Formulas called Bone Stim Liquescence. You use a tsp. under the tongue 30
minutes before/after you eat twice a day. Also taking Super Silica Plus
manufactured by KAL. Started out taking 3 tabs in morning and 3 evening
after a meal and now just taking 2 tablets twice a day.

So pleased with my results.
