Gaining weight and restoring reasonable muscle mass at 60+

Posted by xmohasci @xmohashi, Mar 22, 2024

I have turned 68 and my weight has been reducing despite maintaing balanced diet. Recently, I joined the gym to stay fit and restore reasonable muscle mass. I hope I am on the right path to strengthening my maturing body.

@capnjack I am looking at plain Greek yogurt that has 7 grams of sugar per serving and too good yogurt which 13 gms per serving and actually tastes good.
Oat milk also varies widely in gms of sugar per serving. Planet Oat milk has only 3gms of sugar per serving. Far less than milk and also other oat milks. Secondly at our age we don’t need the sugar and fat in regular milk.
All smoothies are not created equal.
Read the labels.

@daveshaw Oat "milk" is just another processed food product. We DO need fats in our diet, and animal fat (e.g., from milk) is the best source, health-wise. And as for a source of protein, I'll take 8g. in a cup of real milk vs. 3g. in a cup of oat "milk". When I lived a better life, we had raw milk from cows we milked ourselves; the only processing we did was to strain the milk from the bucket through cheesecloth or a cloth diaper into the gallon jug - then waited an hour or so for 1-2" of cream to rise to the top!

@capnjack You lost me with the raw milk. Thank God for pasteurization.
Good luck to you my friend. I hope no one tries using raw milk in their smoothie. My plan is not to kill somebody our age. 😊

@gravity3 interesting…what form is it, a powder ? A pill ? My docs all urge me to do as much PT , exercises and walking as my aching back allows…seems like it works, especially also making a point of eating a few servings of protein daily…no red meat required… but, it takes time.

@nycmusic it is included in a pellet that also contains estradiol. Part of my bhrt bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

@gravity3 I actually suffer from low testosterone and rub testosterone gel on my shoulders after a shower. Ironically my son who is 43 also suffers from low testosterone.
If you want a great exercise try doing planks. That and leg lifts are great for your core.
Keep it up. The older we get the more we have to push ourselves. I used to do the stair master but I found it boring. I use a machine similar to an elliptical but harder. It works my arms as well as my legs.
Good luck.

@daveshaw Oat milk, then yogurt (milk product), why not just whole milk? Also, Greek yogurt is much higher in protein than regular yogurt, and you can get vanilla flavored (Walmart). I get casein protein powder (online, Bulk Supplements) at a pretty good price. No clue what hemp hearts are - never heard of this.

Hemp hearts are shelled hemp seeds.
High in omegas, protein and magnesium with a decent dose of fiber.

@daveshaw Make sure when you get a physical that you have your PCP test for low free testosterone. It can cause problems.
Let me know what you find out.

@daveshaw The piece of equipment I exercise on is a Life Fitness Arc Trainer.
Harder than an elliptical and great for your arms. I couldn’t remember the name earlier.

I'm 63 and lost 50 pounds last year do to illnesses, and a lot of it was muscle.
One thing I started doing is drinking a protein drink with breakfast, as i don't have much of an appetite these days. I try to walk several times a week, do daily stretches, and my dr. just prescribed me some PT to get me going again, which doesn't start til around the beginning of next year. But yeah, it is slow going and I gained a LOT of new wrinkles...Ugh!!
