Hi @angiemama1,

In addition to the information that Justin provided, here's an article that has more details; Prinzmetal's angina is also known as variant angina or coronary vessel spasm/coronary artery vasospasm:

I was diagnosed with it about 10 years ago. I saw Dr Amir Lerman at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Absolutely wonderful and knows a lot about Prinzmetal. My case was severe and they put in a Spinal Cord Stimulator bc I couldn't have bypass. I realize the cost in traveling we had to refinance our home but it's so rare all you hear is WHATS THAT? The earlier you get to a Dr that knows about it the better. If you have a Facebook there is a Prinzmetal Support Group. Members from all over the world. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hello, I was diagnosed with Prinzmetal in Jan 2018 and am now having symptoms from inflammation - sever rashes on hands and legs, blisters in top of mouth, exhaustion, moving pain in hip joint, ankle, knee and foot (all on the right side). Last year I had paralysis of right foot after having a tick bite with a bullseye on that same right foot. I went from being a competitive rower to not being able to walk my dog for more than 15 mins without severe pain. I am receiving PT, have seen a rheumatologist (he says no arthritis), and a neuropsychologists says I'm OK. My GP seems to have given up on me. My cardiologist prescribed Nitro for spasms. I have had many mild to moderate cardiac spasms in the last 6 months and one that took 2 doses of Nitro before subsiding. I'm not sure where to turn for help.

@tullah Has your cardiologist done any testing like Stress test,Echocardiogram or heart catheterization? The reason I ask my by pass surgery was done after all these test where done I was on the nitro patches before surgery triple by pass with 85%,90%95% blockage You are your own advocate so be proactive is my suggestion

Yes, I have had all the tests. Fortunately there is no obstruction and my heart seems to be otherwise healthy. Thank you for your concern, and I wish you all the very best.

I am new here and have just developed Prinzmetal angina. I am a 67-year-old woman in pretty good shape. I am a lifelong migraine sufferer. Thankfully, my case does not seem severe, and I have no coronary artery disease or other associated problems. Over the past few months I’ve had 3 full-blown episodes, all waking me from a deep sleep at night, and some other minor events I think might be related. I’m here because I’m not sure my doctor believes me or knows much about this. He gave me nitroglycerin to take if an attack goes longer than a few minutes, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’d like to know if the angina can manifest differently in different episodes. The majority of attacks have been classic - burning pain and pressure on my right side which radiates down my arm and lasts from 5 to 10 minutes. But I’ve had a few attacks where I just get burning pain in a few small spots in my arm or torso and one where I had a very sharp pain over my heart. Are these related? Has anyone had an attack stimulated by cold? I have not, but it worries me because I swim in cold water sometimes. Thanks!

It is extremely rare. I have an artery that spasms. It can collapse and looks like a piece of paper or to the point of a slinky. 5 heart caths showed each one in a different way. Mayo - Dr Amir Lerman and Dr William Mauck have been amazing. I'm on a lot of medication and have a Spinal Cord Stimulator. However there are some people having been diagnosed with it and they are having a lot of problems getting help because of the rarity. I've had 2 heart attacks and I follow all Drs orders to prevent another one. The symptoms can be the same as a heart attack however if I have a bad spasm it backs up my blood causing other problems

Can I ask what other problems have happened to you when spasms occur?
