Transplant waiting time with live donor

Posted by dhrubasen @dhrubasen, Jun 24, 2025

I am reading that with a live donor, everything (transplant etc) gets done in 3-5 months. I have a live donor - 8 months have passed but not a single test has been done with him - even just to check if his kidney is healthy enough to be donated. When he asks why - he is told that the transplant team waiting on some tests on me.

Sounds very poor management.

Can anyone throw light as to what is going on ?

Thank you for your feedback. Will connect through private message function, Could you please review the best way to do this? I am very empathetic for everyone anxiously awaiting a kidney transplant. I thought that by sharing hospital information, we might be able to ascertain informed next steps if this seems to be a problem with one particular hospital. Hope to connect with this person and really hope we are both just facing fixable situations.

My live donor is waiting for more than 8 months - not a single test done. I am told that all MY tests need to complete before any test is started on the donor.

Not sure why - not even check if he has a healthy kidney to donate or even if his blood group is OK for me.

Anyone in this group has similar experience?

Thanks !!

@dhrubasen Have you contacted your transplant coordinator to find out what tests you may need to complete? Perhaps you have some other health issues they are also dealing with you? Personally, I would be so thankful my donor is being so patient, and staying healthy themselves! And then I would get ticked off at my transplant team, and push hard to get some answers!

I have the same question. My niece goes in for living kidney donation surgery at Mayo next week. My husband just received final approval for the transplant list. She is not a blood type match for him. He is O- which I understand is a rarer match. Now that he's live on the list and she's donating now, we wonder what the time frame looks like for him?

@annebeth, Welcome to Mayo Connect. I am happy to be at the computer and see your message pop up on my screen! This has to be an exciting and anxious time for you, your husband, and your niece.
Since your niece is not a match for your husband, she is going to be part of either a paired exchange (2 donors and 2 recipients) or a chain (more than 2 donors and recipients). Do you know which one? I'm wondering if that might be why you don't have a date for your husband's surgery.
I must confess that I didn't have a living donor, so I am not familiar with how the scheduling works. Will your husband receive his kidney transplant at Mayo? Mine was at Mayo MN in 2009.
I think that you could ask your husband's doctor what kind of a time frame might be involved.
Please let me know what you find out.

Not sure if this helps at all ....my husband was listed in February 2026 through Mayo in Rochester. Both our sons have gone through testing to be a live donor. They only did 1 at a time, our first son was told if he qualified after his testing in April, it wouldn't be until August that they would have surgery space available to do it? I think there is a limit to how many live transplants they do in a month? Also because they can schedule them. He was not a candidate so our other son has been going through testing since the end of May. He had some more tests they wanted to run, he was told September or October. I'm sure it depends on how sick your husband is and where his meld number is to get him in quicker. I would ask at Mayo too, they are most up to date. Good Luck to you and your husband and niece. This has been a crash course for us in transplant.
