Why do I cough up mucus at the end of every meal?
I have researched, but failed to find out why at the instant I complete any meal, I begin to cough up mucus. Most embarrassing!

@sueinmn I came back to this thread because of the continued problem of mine.
Curious...is it still the same....for you...."coughing during and after eating"....has it improved since 2024?

1 Reaction@sueinmn I will look up swallowing exercises and vocal chord therapy to see if there is something to read and learn from.
I will also discuss this with my pulmonologist to see if the system has a speech therapist to see.
Great to hear "largely gone."

Yes, swallowing issues can sometimes contribute to coughing, and in some cases, they can be addressed with targeted exercises. I went through this type of testing myself several years ago.
Another possibility is that increased pressure in the abdominal cavity may be affecting the thoracic cavity. That added pressure can sometimes trigger a cough reflex and may also play a role in reflux.
I have also been following a laryngologist, Dr Inna Husain, on Instagram. She often discusses the role of pepsin enzymes traveling up from the stomach and embedding in the esophageal or throat lining. When we eat or drink, those enzymes may become reactivated, potentially contributing to reflux-related symptoms and coughing. This is one reason she and others suggest alkaline water and alkaline-leaning foods as a supportive strategy.
I have not personally researched this and do not know how widely accepted this concept is across the medical community. I am sharing it simply as something to consider and discuss further with your medical team.
Happy Monday,

2 ReactionsWho prescribes the swallowing issues therapy or the aesophagus exercises therapy?
@lilianna My pulmonologist and ENT both use the speech therapist for swalloing exercises. When my Mom had issues, no ST was available, so we used an occupational therapist who was already working on her post-stroke rehab.
Thank you Sue. I cough after Sal’s. I had bravo capsule but nothing came out obvious- might have or don’t have acid reflux. So you mentioning swallowing exercises gave me an idea to explore. So thanks
After meals- that silly phone
@becleartoday Acid Watcher Diet very effective for managing reflux/heartburn etc. It's all about the pepsin....Well known method in the bronchiectasis world. Yes, it works but takes work!
