Who should I see at Mayo about my aortic ectasia of 4.2 cm?

Posted by oshad @oshad, May 8 12:44pm

Hi, I'm 72 years old and new to this group since I just found I have a smallish (4.2 cm) aortic aneurysm. I don't have a regular cardiologist but I like Mayo (had hand surgery there recently). Any suggestions for cardios that you've had and like? Thanks!

I am a 67 year old who was just diagnosed with a 4.0. I get all of my specialty care at Mayo. I learned there are Cardiologists who specialize in a noninvasive method to stent the aneurysm. I'm an RN and I know they don't do any major surgeries below 5, but I live in Michigan and I don't want to wait. Major surgeries are emergency and involve a cardiac bypass. I will let you know if I find a good surgeon if you are interested. Let me know please visa versa. Good Luck! Sue

Thanks Sue. I’m in Phoenix and Mayo is going to recommend a cardiologist based on the info I filled out online. I’ll do some research of my own before accepting their recommendation. I’ll keep you posted.

They do surgery under 5cm in special circumstances. I had a Bentall procedure at Mayo Jacksonvilee during an emergent situation. My aortic root was 4.8 and mid ascending aorta 4.7 at the time. I am being monitored for a 4.6 on the native distal area of the ascending aorta at present.

@oshad
Is the Mayo Clinic recommending a cardiologist in Phoenix? I assumed they would recommend a cardiologist at their location. Hmmmmm....maybe I can ask for their recommendation in my area of NJ?

Oh, yes, I'm not interested in traveling to a different city -- unless I have to!

How is your recovery from the Bentall procedure? It has been recommended to me.

You need a Cardiothoracic surgeon for surgery not a cardiologist ...that's if and when you should ever need surgery

@alfred456 Yes. That's why I need a cardiologist first. I haven't seen one. My primary care doc sent me for a CT last year and that's when the 3.8 area was found. She had me get another a couple of weeks ago and it was 4.2. I haven't heard anything from her so I decided to get a cardiologist and see if I need a CT every 6 months or a year or something more right now.

I just wanted to add that one thing I like about Mayo is that we patients get to easily see all of our records online. Yesterday I got a notice on the app that some test results were available. I went into the records and there were all 1,600+ images from my aorta CT. The best part was the series that shows my aorta and surrounding branches as single images, isolated from everything else. It's fascinating to see, but more important, I can do research and ask better questions when I see a doctor because I have access to all my records.
