Who has experience with very tight hamstring and painful hamstring aft

Posted by jps1313 @jps1313, Mar 5 11:14am

My hamstring was very tight before surgery. The surgery was supposed to address this issue but it's very tight and painful.
I'm 15 days out from surgery. I have a PT evaluation in 12 days. I have not seen anyone from Mayo since surgery which is kind of troubling but is apparently their approach.
Any insights?

I have a PT evaluation at Mayo in 11 days. I hope they have a reasonable plan. I can't come close to straightening my knee out. I had the surgery 15 days ago so it's obviously still early, being laid up and somewhat isolated heightens my anxiety apparently.
My wife teaches Chair yoga, so. I'm looking forward to her help.
Thank you for your response.

I am having this same issue after TKR 11 weeks ago. Would greatly appreciate hearing if either of you find resolution.

I am 5 weeks out from my TKA at Mayo's. I am from the Twin Cities. I think if you are not from Rochester they do not have much primary contact with you. I found though if you contact your surgical team via their portal they are responsive to you inquiries. I am now having issues with my hamstrings, I am hoping massage therapy might help.

I have a lot of tightness and discomfort where my hamstrings insert into my pelvis. Those hamstring muscles are also very tight. I see someone for dry needling, and she has done that to my hamstrings and I've gotten some pain relief from it. Please do some research on dry kneedling so you understand how it works.

You said you had surgery, but I don't know if that was surgery on the hamstrings or a knee or hip replacement. Before going further with dry kneedling, I'd talk with the surgeon about it. Get their advice on whether or whether not to try it.

In the meantime use ice to relieve pain. Don't use heat, it only increases inflammation.

All the best to you friend.

My apologies @jps1313. You did mention the surgery was only 15 days ago at the time of your comment.

Please ignore my comments on dry kneedling. I think this can be effective as a long-term treatment for muscle tightness, but not during rehab from a knee replacement.

Why did your surgeon say that a knee replacement would help with tight hamstrings? I've had both knees replaced, primarily to relieve pain caused by osteophytes and no cartilage left in my knees. The surgery and rehab gave me that relief.

Anyway, just wondering about the comment on your hamstrings. Also, please keep in mind that a large tourniquet is placed around the thigh before and during surgery. My surgeon didn't tell me and 3 days after surgery all my quads turned black and blue. I freaked out! I didn't know they did that, apply a tourniquet, but it certainly makes sense to stem blood flow during surgery. Anyway, over time, all the bruising disappeared.

I hope you get some answers when you have your firt post-op visit.
