Weight Gain after Weight Loss Surgery. Let's support each other
Hello All!
My name is Ronnie. I was sleeved October 2016. From the beginning of my journey, I lost between 80-90 pounds (depending on the day). I never reached my goal.
Since my WLS, I have had other physical issues that has impacted my ability to walk and exercise. In addition, I have been on multiple medications with a weight gain side affect and I've had 3 surgeries (one for melanoma and two on my spine) This is my way of saying I've gained approximately 20-30 pounds. I am TERRIFIED to get on the scale!!!!
I've not be able to get back on program and I seem to have lost my focus. I've tried to go on each phase of the program (liquid, soft, etc.), but I am not able to follow through. I had no problem staying on a liquid diet for weeks before surgery and weeks after. I don't know if it was because I knew I was having the surgery?????
I need help to get my mojo back. Anyone else? Let's support each other and our efforts to get back on track and continue our journey together!

Hi @missstephyl, Welcome to Connect. I haven't had the weight loss surgery but thought about it when I was up to 330+ in my 50s. I've struggled with weight my entire adult life and it's only been the past few years that I've been able to get down to a comfortable weight for me and maintain it. I have been between able to maintain my weight between 210 and 220 now for well over a year and I attribute it to intermittent fasting (daily time-restricted fasting - eat normally but only within an eight-hour window each day). I alternate between an 8, 6 or 4 hour eating window based on how I'm doing with my weight. I'm still thinking of trying to lose an additional 10 pounds but haven't really started working on it yet.
There is a discussion you might find helpful if you want to give it a try.

1 ReactionI had gastric bypass July 2018. I lost 62 pounds. Was not quite to my goal, but it felt and looked damn good. Then I gained 5 pounds, 7 pounds...15 pounds. I lost 7, then gained. So then I was up 20 pounds. This was so frustrating. I would find myself going back on the liquid pre-surgery diet. That helped. Now I am at 30 regain. I am so angry with myself. I have no one to talk to about this, no one understands what I'm feeling. I do have a love for food. At times I get tired of trying to figure out what to eat for each meal, then I go back to my protein shakes. They take the guess work and effort out of trying to think of and prepare a healthy meal. I just need to be heard by people that know where I'm coming from.

2 ReactionsHello, I had gastric bypass 3 yrs ago and have gained back about 45 of the 100 I lost. This is associated a lot with depression after losing my only sister suddenly. Has anyone tried Saxendra to help get back on track and get the weight off
Thanks for any replies
Kaye, same issue here. Was sleeved in late 2015 and lost 125lbs over the following 12 months. Maintained that weight for the next year, but did not undertake any physical exercise during that time. Come the pandemic, I hibernated for nearly 2 years and fell back into my "grazing" routine (eating small snacks pretty much all day and into the late night.) As a result, I have regained 30lbs and went from wearing 2X to 3X shirts and added 2 inches to my waist. I know I have a food addiction/eating disorder...which is what got me to the 450lbs I was at before surgery.
I am now seeking counseling to address the overeating and hopefully avoid further weight gain or the need for bypass surgery.

1 Reactionhi I an a newcomer to this site. I had a stomach stapling as they called it many years ago. I did not lose all my weight and consistently have gained every year since. I am now a senior and still obese. My question is....once you have the surgery and gain all your weight back, what happens inside your body? Does the "alteration" do anything to stop you from losing??? I can lose if I go on about 800 calories a day and even then it is painfully slow. Some of the heart and blood thinner medications apparently do not help with weight loss either. I am absolutely stumped as to what to try next and the Drs. just say count calories!! I am here on this site hoping to find others who may have some new suggestions or can exchange info
I hear you! I can’t get weight off either but I try to focus on what weight I was able to keep off. I’m thinking of trying weight watchers again. Maybe We not eating enough? I exercise all the time and see no results. I’m at menopause age. I’m about 9 years out from surgery. I don’t regret it one bit but find this road block frustrating.

2 ReactionsWelcome @kaye4c, I've struggled most of my life with weight and can definitely understand your frustration gaining the weight back. I haven't had weight loss surgery but have found that intermittent fasting and low carb healthy fat eating has helped me keep the weight off. There is another discussion that you may find helpful --- Low-carb healthy fat living. Intermittent fasting. I also found this article that you might helpful - How to Keep the Weight Off After Bariatric Surgery: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/how-to-keep-the-weight-off-after-bariatric-surgery/.
@grandmar may have some suggestions or thought to share with you also. Have you discussed your weight gain with your doctor to see if they may have some suggestions?
I gained all of the weight I lost during the height of the pandemic. I’d had a gastric sleeve in 2017 and had “only”gained back 30 of the 100lbs I’d lost until 2020. I also have a number of other health conditions, but it is beyond frustrating that all of the weight is back.
