Volara nebulizer

Posted by davis5663 @davis5663, Dec 8, 2025

For anyone using the Volara for nebulizing: The new nebulizer cups they have started using do not work after sterilizing with a baby bottle sterilizer. The parts don't fit together correctly. Have you had this problem? I'm thinking I'm going to have to send it back. The company only recommends cleaning with soap and water which doesn't kill the NTM.

Hi Jill, I use the Volara twice a day, with 7% saline. I was told to breathe normally. I no longer use the Airobika; also have never used a vest. My doctor prescribed the Volara because I wasn't responding as well as expected to the big 3 plus Aricayce (I have MAC), and she thought I was too thin to use a vest.
I do the first 5 minutes, then take a short break to moisten my mouth, then finish the session. In the evenings I also do airway clearance (about 20 minutes); I don't make much sputum, much less than when I was first diagnosed and also less than when I was on inhaled antibiotics.
I disassemble and soak in soapy water then rinse the handpiece once a day; just disassemble and rinse the other time. I use hot water from my 135 degree tank. No sterile water. I don't try to clean the air hose.

I’m so sorry somehow I hit post before I was able to clean up the above typos. Additionally, I’m very confused with I’m cleaning.
I do not know what to do. I did not know which part to clean and how often. Previously when I was on a nebulizer alone, I cleaned every day and paid a special attention t0 the mouthpiece which I used, which I cleaned with bleach and a brush.
I can’t separate all the parts to clean them individually I’m afraid if I pull out the tube, it will affect the filter which cannot get wet. I really need help.
Again, sorry for the above typos, but I’mv A noviceat all this jill

How long were you on the big 3 and Aricayce before and how long have you had MAC?

Vinegar cleaning might be an option although if it’s not fitting together, sending it back makes sense. I use Aeroeclipse and it does well in Bololo.

I’ve melted a couple things, too.

I was diagnosed with MAC in the fall of 2024 but didn't start meds until June 2025. I had two cavities, so I was put on full dose of the big 3, plus Aricayce every other day. A month into treatment, pseudomonas showed up in my sputum, so was treated for that as well. Developed balance problems after 2 months on tobramycin, so stopped that and Aricayce (about 6 months ago). Started using the Volara at the same time.
So for the last 6 months I've been on big 3 and Volara. Lung function test and CT indicate some improvement, I feel really good but am concerned that docs may want me to add another med since the cavities are still there (smaller and thinner-walled, but still here).
Maybe more answer than you wanted...

Sarah, this is great info and I will be asking my team about Volara. I've been on the big 3 and Arikayce and CT scans are bad after 18 months.

Oh Dorothy, that's a long time to be on those meds and CT is still bad. I hope the Volara can help. Warning, it's expensive! -Sarah

@dorothyjeansimpson Hasmyour doctor ordered sensitivity testing to make sure you are on the right antibiotic for the strain of MAC you have? Sometimes, new and different strains show up that don't respond to the same meds, and the docs need to find a different one.
