Vest for airways clearance

Posted by lindenflower @lindenflower, 6 days ago

Guys with bronchiectasis,
Do you all use a vest for airways clearance?
My new doctor prescribed one.
Is it a must have or do some of you do airways clearance without it?

Thank you.

@lindenflower Some pulmonologists to prescribe them widely - my own pulmonologist is more conservative, and reserves them for people who cannot do adequate clearance without them.
Did you ask your doctor why they prescribed the vest?

@sueinmn Thank you for the response!
No, I haven’t asked.
I should, because I can’t freely take deep breaths in it. It constricts very much.

Like Sue, my ID doc, pulmonologist, and cardiologist here at UMN and Mayo Rochester are conservative, and all agree that if I'm able to clear with PD and AC techniques they really don't want me to use a vest. I am also diligent in my 8 miles daily runs and doing great without the vest, so far. Terri

My pulmonologist recommended it so I use it every day. It supposed to loosen mucus, reduce exacerbations and hospitalization.
I do it now in the morning since I lost my husband on 10/16 who did chest PT every morning.

@lindenflower PD is postural drainage and AC is airway clearance. There's great videos on techniques of both. My docs are thrilled that I am a distance runner because high intensity exercise is one of the easiest ways to clear mucus. Terri

Thank you. It is very difficult. The silence in our home is deafening.

@terrimn See, that was what I was doing- jogging/walking. Sometimes 5 minutes of jogging would initiate a good airways clearance for me.
But usually I run in c the morning, and in the evening my airways clearance a kind of stalling- nothing happening there.

@lindenflower Do you run through all the 8 miles or walk some of it?

Hi all, I'm curious to learn from those of you whose doctors are conservative about prescribing a vest -- what is the reason for the hesitation? I don't know if my docs are "conservative" about vests or not, but they suggested it, prescribed it, and I've found it helpful. So I'm wondering why hold back?

@lvnl Here are some reasons my Pulmonologist gave me: Not everyone needs it, cumbersome, expensive, not appropriate for people with spine issues or osteoporosis, many people try it and put it aside, difficult for people who travel.

@lindenflower I start my runs with a 5 minute warmup-walking very fast, then 8 miles run (avg 5 mph), then cool down with another 1/2 mile steady walking to get HR back down. Total about 9 miles.

After dinner my husband and I walk, so additional AC occurs for me. I have always found the best AC technique is exercise. Thank goodness I love all types, and I love the feeling of cleared lungs!
