Type of bariatric surgery did you have? Side effects good or bad?

Meeting with my surgeon tomorrow, curious about what type of bariatric surgery is the best, and why?

@hope2lose23,

If you have not reviewed the comments in the following discussion, you will see many comments on the different types of surgery people have had or are considering:

The following website explains the different types, advantages and disadvantages of each:

Each surgery has its pros and cons, and not all are options for every individual. The surgeon will probably review options and recommend which ones they think are best for you. I would review the different types and ask why one is better than others in your situation.

I originally was going to have a sleeve in 2013, but the surgeon recommended
Roux-en-Y due to the amount of weight I had to lose.

Do you have one that you think is right for you?

Had ReY GBP at VA hospital 16 days ago. Need to lose 90-106 lbs. So far no issues and the team is happy with my progress. The 2-week liver shrinkage diet was much easier than anticipated. Post surgery, I'm never hungry, even after sitting through a few "Max the Meat Guy" YouTube videos with my grandkids this weekend. Phase 2 beginning solid foods started yesterday, and the scrambled egg, greek yogurt, and tuna for B, L, and D were delicious, but I needed to stop at 2T. I guess the only issue so far is the sudden realization that everything eating wise is changed forever. I knew it before, but once it's on you, it's a wake up. Gas supposedly is forever, so hello Beano for life!

Welcome to Mayo Connect. Glad things are going well so far. And you're right, to be sucessful you eating patterns will be different from now on. But just remind yourself of the benefits.

I only have problems with gas if I eat the wrong type of food, but everyone is different.

As you lose weight, what are you looking forward to doing?

Walking and playing with grandkids much longer without stopping after a few minutes because I need to catch my breath.

I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2019. I lost 90 lbs in a year. The issue I have had following the surgery is sneezing and massive mucus each time I eat anything. I also have low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, and fatigue. I take loads of vitamins and supplements, but they do not help the symptoms. I was told my vagus nerve was probably damaged during the procedure.

I had RNY in October 2025. I sneezed every morning prior to surgery and still do! I now get hiccups when I eat but that is new since my surgery. I did get foamies once early on post op but not since. To me, the constant gas is the worst side affect at this time.
