Trazodone stopped working

Posted by tanika84 @tanika84, May 8 4:29pm

I've had insomnia for about 20 years. Until last month, I've gotten by on unisom (1/2 tablet, 12.5mg) every night, and zaleplon occasionally in the middle of the night, as a "rescue".
Last month I thoughtlessly stopped the unisom "cold turkey" and started having rebound insomnia about a week later. Since then my insomnia was, and continues to be, MUCH worse.
Last week my PCP took me off previous drugs, and put me on Trazodone 50mg. Metoprolol, and melatonin. These meds worked great first night, 2nd night.. not bad, but has been declining since to the point where I slept only 3 hours, and 2 hours, on two of the following nights.
Does anyone have insight into this?
Thank you. Grateful to find this support group.

I don't understand the metoprolol. ???

It's too bad you inadvertently disrupted what was working. Personally, as a person with intermittent and unpredictable insomniac tendencies, I avoid using anything except melatonin or other low-grade sleep aids that Webber and Jaimeson put out to pharmacies, and then only twice each week. I don't lie awake all hours of the night, but I do awaken inside of 4 hours often and find that 3-5 mg of melatonin taken at bedtime often makes the difference on the nights I feel I really do need to catch up some.

The only other sleep aid I have been prescribed, and that was for general, low-grade anxiety after surgeries on my heart, is zopiclone. It was hit and miss. Like all such aids, the first night is a shock to the system and it performs well. But if you repeat, or run three nights in succession, your body seems to learn to resist it. That is why I 'suffer' three nights out of every four before I will take another 3-5 mg gummy of melatonin. I want it to retain its effect, and I know that successive nights will just undo that effect..................for me.

@gloaming Thank you for the response.

I don't understand the metoprolol either. My BP, before the medication, was not problematic. I have my first appointment with a sleep doctor (vs. PCP) in two days. I will ask about that.

Huh - your observation that first night of taking [a drug] is a "shock to the system", so it works well. That may explain the waning effect of the Trazodone. Similarly, repeated nightly usage of your melatonin weakens its effectiveness.. body learns to resist it.

Thanks again for the very helpful insights. I am now much better prepared to assess my options. Thank you.

I take 2 Trazadone ( 100mg) each night & that seems to work 98% of the time.
Every once in awhile I don't sleep period & don't know why. I know it is very
important to take the tablets with food. I also take 2 melatonin gummies (20mg)
and 1 High absorption Magnesium glycinate (100mg) every night ( both taste good 🙂 )
I have been having stomach aches recently but don't think it is related even
though stomach problems are listed as a side effect. So I have
an appt with a gastroenterologist IN JULY.... I hate waiting but don't see an alternative.
Any ideas?
