Topiramate 50 Mg and Phentermine 15 Mg for weight loss

Posted by riana1 @riana1, Oct 26, 2023

I had gastric bypass surgery in 2016.
Over time I regained the weight. Went to a gastric bypass doctor on referral by primary doctor.

He prescribed me Topiramate 50 Mg and Phentermine 15 Mg for weight loss management.

I am on the fence about taking these drugs even though he assured me it’s safe. Topiramate is a drug used to treat epilepsy and Phentermine is used to lessen appetite.

Has anyone in this group tried weight loss pills, if so which ones, were useful, and did you experience side effects.

Good luck to you also on your weight loss goals!

Sadly, I have about 60lbs to go. 😭 But I'm motivated. I don't see the lbs as much as the inches.

That’s very doable, imo. I have about 40 more to go, though I’m not sure I should go that low. I was that low for most of my adult life, but I’ll look very thin now, if I there. I’m keeping it open and will discuss it with my doctor.

You sound very motivated and that’s most if it, imo.

That’s true about inches. I wrote my early measurements down and can’t locate them! Lol Oh well, hope they turn up.

Best of luck!

I started using Topiramate and found it really helped with my appetite. I did have to stop taking it because I have a history of kidney stones, and my nephrologist insisted.

I take Topiramate, or Topamax, for neuropathy. It does stifle my appetite. I like that about it. I like Gabapentin more, for nerve pain, but my pcp won’t prescribe it to me.
I wasn’t aware that Topiramate can cause kidney stones. I get severe UTIs very frequently. Now I’m wondering if the Topamax could be exacerbating the problem.
Thanks for the info.

I have a prescription for Gabapentin, but had to stop taking it due to vision issues. I’m not super bothered by it though, since my pain has subsided quite a bit. I’m supposed to start Lexapro soon, but dread it due to the weight gain it can cause. That’s the last thing I need.

I tried both of them together. No effect if you also can’t diet and exercise. Was also on wegovy for 5 months. I felt sick, somewhat depressed, and totally unmotivated for most of that time. I didn’t lose an ounce.
I started the 29 g low carb keto diet suggested by Dr Eric Westman (YouTube). After 2 months I have lost almost 20# . My husband has lost 22# and is at his goal weigh. He will stay on keto but up his carbs a little.
I still have 50# to go but I know I can make it on this diet since it is easy IF you take the time to understand it and plan your meals and have stuff in the house if you need it. Good luck. Obesity is a disease of the metabolism I think, activated by the junk added to our foods by big companies that want big money.
You can do this. You may need someone to do it with you or to be your support but you CAN do it.

I saw my Endocrinologist this week and I had recently lost another pound, but it’s still slow. She referred me to their nutritionist. She says my calories are too low. I don’t dispute that. And, my carbs are very low too.

Hey 👋

So glad to see your post!
? Are you losing inches?

I stopped the medication because around the second week of December I was waiting on insurance approval for a Myleogram procedure until I saw what it involved and promptly told the specialist I preferred the MRI.

We also did a holiday roadtrip to Illinois to spend Christmas with our family.

During the holidays I gave myself permission to gain 10 pounds of which I gained 5lbs and loss 4 of those gained pounds to date.

The reason I asked you about inches is because I noticed that I am loosing inches faster than weight.

Therefore I don't rely too heavily upon the scale because the body can hold onto water reflecting in the weight number.

Another thing that is helpful is fasting because it has helped me to reduce inflammation in my body to exercise within my health limits.

I push myself to get in at least 2000 steps a day. A small number for others but a milestone for me. 😁

I also have an appointment with my Baristric Doctor who initially wanted to recommend me to a nutritionist.

I opted to forego seeing a nutrition specialist. I explained to him that I don't have a problem with eating, or what to eat or over eat. My problem is I am not losing weight with the little that I do eat. Than he suggested the medication.

I restarted it this week and I will see how it goes.

Awwww, our little temples we live. Gotta live them.

Please share your nutrition visit experience if you inclined to do so.

Enjoy your weekend!😉

It sounds like things are going well for you. Have you had the MRI?

I know I am losing inches. I need to measure all over again. I think I need a new measuring tape. I can’t believe my eyes! My numbers are substantially lower than those I recall. My torso is really smaller. I hope I can locate my earlier figures. I know that I’m now wearing Mediums and some Smalls! I was in 1x or 2X. Still, I have a ways to go to reach my goal.

My arms need more muscle. They look scrawny, imo.

I have a busy weekend scheduled. Hope yours is fun!!!

Sounds like you're doing awesome in the inches meltdown. I'm staying alive as the Gibbs brothers beautifully sung.

Yes, I had the MRI and have an appointment this week to discuss results and options for me.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying my weekend plans as you are. Take care, stay safe, and celebrate every single moment of your life and enjoy those who love you that are still in this world and remember fondly those who loved you that are no longer here.

Live, love and laugh 😂
