Topiramate 50 Mg and Phentermine 15 Mg for weight loss

Posted by riana1 @riana1, Oct 26, 2023

I had gastric bypass surgery in 2016.
Over time I regained the weight. Went to a gastric bypass doctor on referral by primary doctor.

He prescribed me Topiramate 50 Mg and Phentermine 15 Mg for weight loss management.

I am on the fence about taking these drugs even though he assured me it’s safe. Topiramate is a drug used to treat epilepsy and Phentermine is used to lessen appetite.

Has anyone in this group tried weight loss pills, if so which ones, were useful, and did you experience side effects.

I started using Topiramate and found it really helped with my appetite. I did have to stop taking it because I have a history of kidney stones, and my nephrologist insisted.

Thank you so much for sharing. So, the doctor didn’t see a way that a bout with kidney stones could be prevented? Or drinking lots of water while taking could prevent kidney stones?

You got me thinking. I have the medications but still have not started using them.

No way around being able to use Topiramate. He explained that my gastric sleeve surgery in 2012 and upcoming bypass surgery strongly increases my risk for kidney stones (I've had them since 2015.)

Thank you for responding. I had the Roux-en-y gastric bypass. My weight gain happened out of stress of being a caregiver for my mother and mother n law of which both recently past.

My plan is to first jump start with a 14 day waterfast to address inflammation. Then start on the meds.

Keep me lifted up and I will keep you in my prayers for your upcoming bypass surgery.

Appreciate you!

I was wondering what you ended up doing. Was Wegovy an option?

Happy New Year!

I started taking the medication. But before starting I completed a 5 day dry fast and 7 day water fast because I was having inflammation joint pain.

Lost 28 lbs and started the medication couple of days before Thanksgiving. It certainly helps me energy wise. Walking more and increasing my daily steps.

The thing is I don't eat much so the gastric bypass doctor prescribed it in hope to my increase metabolism.

I stopped taking them two weeks before Christmas because I had medical procedures done.

However, I am maintaining the weight loss most likely because I can't eat a-lot and not nibbling on the wrong foods.

I am glad you followed up with me today! I will start taking them.

Again, thank you so very much for reaching back out to me. ❤️🙂

That sounds awesome! Congratulations on your progress!

I am interested in the part about increasing metabolism. I’m on a weight loss journey too, except I didn’t have surgery. I’ve done really well, but have hit a plateau despite tight diet and daily workouts. I would like to drop 15 more by March 21 (not my ultimate goal)and can’t envision it happening at the rate I’m going now.

And, my calories are too low to decrease them any further. I take supplements to keep my nutrition on track. And, high nutrient foods.

I have type 1 diabetes and wear an insulin pump. That might be what holds me back at times.

Good luck going forward. How far are you from your goal?

Happy New Year!

Good luck to you also on your weight loss goals!

Sadly, I have about 60lbs to go. 😭 But I'm motivated. I don't see the lbs as much as the inches.
