Looking for suggestions for help with traveling alone

Posted by skhollandmt @skhollandmt, Nov 2, 2021

Due to an unfortunate delay with insurance approval I will have to travel alone for a pituitary tumor removal. I need someone who can help me from the hospital to the hotel and stay with me a few hours a day for a couple days. I called visiting angels but they're short staffed (as everyone is). Anyone have suggestions?

Which mayo location will be going to? And what are dates?

@skhollandmt Hello and Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm so sorry that because of insurance delays you find you must travel alone for surgery.

Where are you traveling to for your surgery? If you are going to a Mayo Clinic location, I'm going to bring a few others, @colleenyoung @hopeful33250 @gingerw into this discussion who will know how to find this out at Mayo.

Have you contacted the medical department of your surgeon to ask if they have a social worker who can help you with this? I'm wondering if your insurance has coverage for this. I've been amazed at what insurance covers when I asked the question. Or is there a social worker associated with the medical center where you will have your surgery? Do you attend a religious organization in your home town who will have ideas or have connections with the city where you will go for surgery?

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers for your surgery, your travel, and a solution for this.

Hello @skhollandmt

As I recall from another post you were planning on going to Mayo Clinic. If that is still the case I recommend that you contact the Mayo Clinic Concierge services. Here is the link,https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota/concierge-services. If you call them they will undoubtedly be able to answer many of your questions.

As Helen, @naturegirl5, said, Mayo does have social workers who will certainly offer you assistance as well. When you contact the concierge services, you might ask about speaking to a social worker. They might very well be able to put you in touch with personal help that you require after your surgery.

As Helen indicated, my prayers and best wishes also go with you as well. Is there a date scheduled for your surgery?

Please keep in touch with any other questions or concerns.
