Now what? How will I be notified about my Mayo Clinic appointments?
I was accepted by the Oral and Maxillofacial Dept last Friday for a consult. Was told to watch my messages for an appointment offer. How soon should I be expecting the appt offer message? I know my actual first visit can be months down the road and that's ok. I'm just worried I'll miss an appointment offer. So how do they work? Is it a first come first serve type of thing where whomever logs into their account first and accepts the appt gets it? Or is it person specific? Any other helpful info I should know while I wait?! Thanks!!

2 ReactionsYes, the first to respond gets it. They fill up fast. Respond as quickly as you can.
Appointments can take months. Collect all your medical and dental records for review. Anything on EPIC the
department there can review. Pre plan where you want to stay and check travel and room prices.
I called my specialty clinic every few weeks to see if there were any updates. Good luck it was worth the wait.

1 ReactionI have significant experience with Oral and Maxillofacial in Rochester. They arrange a schedule for you along with radiology, dental, and several other departments as required for your specific needs. This way when you arrive, your visit will be short because all of the services will be lined up in a schedule.
Contrast this care to what is standard at most other clinics where the patient gets an initial look, then an appointment in a week or so for radiology, then come back again for the next thing, and on and on for several months. Mayo is setting up your schedule with an initial wait to get the ducks lined up followed by several appointments within a day or three. This is all normally followed by the patient saying “Wow.”
My annual check, which usually involves three or four specialists, begins with Oral Max contacting me three months prior with a date. If that date doesn’t work for me, they can take ten days sometimes to get an adjusted schedule back to me.
Patients patient.

4 ReactionsWhen you are offered an appointment, it can happen at anytime. Sometimes cancellations happen, or they open the calendar for future months. They do not usually make appointments more than a few months out. And it varies my dept. Make sure notifications are set up on your portal. When I get an appointment, I receive both a text message and an email. And once it opens up, there may be multiple times available, but multiple people will be trying to get those appointments, so you need to act fast.

2 Reactions@readinglamb, you are in good hands at Mayo Clinic. I agree with the helpful replies you've received from fellow Mayo patients like @hrhwilliam @roch @seniormed and others. The first step is to download Mayo's patient portal called Patient Online Services test.onlineservices.mayoclinic.org/patientportal
To get personal help with setting up or using your account with Patient Online Services, contact Mayo's Concierge Services https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota/concierge-services.
You will be notified of your appointments on the patient portal first. It can take a few days to a couple of weeks. If you're concerned, please contact the scheduling office in Rochester, Minnesota to ensure that they have your contact information and how to contact preferences.
Have you already downloaded the patient portal?

3 Reactions@hrhwilliam Thank you for this information!! It makes so much more sense as to how they do things and the wait times etc. I appreciate it so much!! I was just scheduled for my consult yesterday actually! I only need to wait a month for it, so not too bad. I'm at an advantage as I am local-ish to Rochester. Just a few hours drive time, so nothing major. Easily able to go there and home in the same day.

1 Reaction@colleenyoung Yes, Patient portal app is set up and downloaded! Luckily that was the easiest part as I saw a local mini branch in 2008 for a rheumatology consult. I had already had access to my patient portal at some point. Just needed to get myself back into it now. Thank you for the assistance, I appreciate it!!
