Are Parkinson's symptoms increased with stress?

Posted by esther589 @esther589, May 25 1:51am

I think my symptoms are increased when I feel stressed.
We currently have visitors staying close by and the pressure I feel to think about their needs every day as well as our own seems to be making my symptoms worse.
I've noticed it also when I go for hospital visits.
Do others experience this?

Yes, my symptoms are definitely worse when I'm dealing with insurance companies and the VA health care system. Getting appointments scheduled, getting approved for a specialist, dealing with artifical intelligence on the phone, all adds up and pushes all of my buttons. Symptoms increase every time for me when this occurs.

Has anyone found anything that helps address the mental "fight or flight" attacks brought on by stress - it seems when my husband tries to balance the bank account online or even play a game of checkers, - in a fact whenever he needs to focus - he gets a burning right temple around the eye and his feet burn. Docs say it is autonomic dysfunction of his body temperature regulation.

YES! Any type of stress makes all of my symptoms worse! It is impossible, of course, to eliminate all stressful situations, however I do my best to make & keep my life simple - a little boring, but it does help!

Sounds easy, doesn't it?

@esther589 You're absolutely right about that! We can't change our reality, but we can change how we respond to it. And sometimes you have to feel what you feel for as long as you need to feel it, , and when you get done with it, you can move on to something different, until you find something that makes sense. Some times we get stuff thrown at us that we did not order, and it's not fair (because I could list any number of folks who deserve a dance or two with Mr. Parkinson,) but I safisfy myself by believing that something worse lies ahead for him. And even with Mr. P lurking about,I know i wouldn't trade my troubles for anyone else's because there really are worse things. I have 5 cousins who have lost a child. Just thinking about that almost makes me want to bake a cake for Mr. P, So, sending you hugs from Berlin. The city's mascot is a bear so you'll be getting bear hugs to get you through whatever you have to get through. J

@esther589 Sometimes stress is a rational response to reaality. And you are a different person that you were before you brought Mr. Patkinson into your life,. ayou can't do some of the things that made you you. And you have to do other things that are new andnot at all what you're accustomed to. So just try to gt acquainted with the new you and do things that make sense as you adjust to this whole new world.

I understand. I don't feel like I am the same person anymore. I try be 'in the moment' but it's hard not to grieve the loss of your former self.

I know the feeling but my general practitioner always allows his self time between appointments so he can spend time with his patients

I know that times like this last week when I had a doctors appointment, the guy who said I have Parkinson's, and I had to wait in the hall waiting room for an hour did not help me! Wife said I should not have been upset as in my last appointment she says he took a full half hour or more with me instead of the "normal" 15 minutes. So the patients after me were late for their time with him.

As for me at this time only "meds" he has suggested is Miralax and prunes for my constipation. This and some exercises and walking daily!

When I am stressed, everything is worse. My meds wear off faster and take longer to work. I am much stiffer. Everything overwhelms me. I get so annoyed that I can't hide my stress like others. It has made me deal with stress so much faster; no more extended fights with my spouse.

I can't hide my stress either. Maybe this is a common thing?

My wife/caregiver has a very short temperament and when she goes off ,several times a day, it messes me up for awhile then I try not to eratate her but I am a natural at it. I do seem to get back to my new normal but it does seem to make that, the new normal,

It must be very difficult for you. Perhaps your wife might benefit from either an online or local support group. Sometimes our loved ones find it difficult to cope with our condition.
It sounds like you are 'treading on eggshells'. Don't blame yourself, you have enough to deal with. Adjusting to the changes this condition brings isn't easy.
I hope I you will find the support and kindness that you need.
