How long did you take a statin before you started feeling side-effects?

30 years - no side effects. I've gone from mevacor, zocor, and crestor -- only changing when efficacy declined.

With Lipitor it was about 3 months. I tried taking it every other day, then lowered it more. I had terrible leg cramps especially at night. 2 weeks off, and I was fine. Then Crestor snuck up on me. I had body aches that crept up, then I could use my manual can opener, I had other weird things going on, then fuzzy thinking and brain fog. I was actually going to a physical therapist for something unrelated and had a list for her. I went off Crestor and within a couple if weeks went back to normal and can use my can opener and open jars again. I had a DNA test done which said that I shouldn't use Lipitor. Well, I sure did figure that out on my own!

What was the DNA test you had done, @kallettla and what specifically did it find that showed you shouldn’t use Lipitor?

I got DNA testing done through All of Us. They are doing research and they may accept more people. It was one of the genes they chose to check. SLCO1B1.

@kallettla
Out of all the genes, this is the one I just heard referenced in a Mayo Clinic podcast out this week. What are the odds?

Information I heard is Mayo Clinic looked at the SLCO1B1 gene associated with simvastatin intolerance, and they did not find this.

How interesting. At any rate I can't take statins.

I started having a side effect almost immediately. I have had muscle soreness and pain, and also easy bruising. I think these effects are a good trade-off when considering what could happen without taking the statin. I would recommend a frank conversation with the doctor. I had the same effects with every brand of stain l tried, but this may not turn out the same way for you.

Good luck!

Hello, I started feeling side affects over a year after taking Atorvastatin. I’m assuming it was from the statin. Muscle aches in my arms and shoulders. I just had my dose lowered from 20mg to 10mg. I’m waiting to see if they subside.

I’m wondering if anyone knows how long it would take after lowering statin dose to see an improvement in symptoms. Thanks.
