Skin problems under Ostomy appliance
I have a urostomy since Feb 2022 and have a lot of problems with the skin under the coloplast appliance. I have done allergy testing and I am not allergic to the appliance . Does anyone have this problem and what helps heal the skin?

I've had great success with Hollister Adapt Stoma Powder # 7906. If you go on YouTube and search for "how to use Adapt Stoma Powder" you will find an excellent short video. The healing of my skin with using this powder was amazing.
What type of appliance do you use? I find that using powder makes it difficult for my coloplast appliance to adhere. Thank you I will watch the video and try it.
I use Hollister CeraPlus # 8414 which is a 1 piece pre-cut to the size of my stoma (1") paired with Adapt CeraRing # 8815. If you call Hollister, I am pretty sure they will send you samples to try out. YouTube has an amazing amount of "how to" videos about urostomies.
After cleaning the skin around the stoma, I use a pad of Cavilon barrier film # 3342, then sprinkle the powder lightly - some powder will stick to the moistness of the Cavilon.
When using the powder, you must blow out all but a very thin layer - I use a blow dryer on cold and low setting for just a couple of seconds to mimic just blowing it off.
I was told by the nurse not to use Cavillon as I had purchased the spray and the barrier wipes. They kept on telling me less is better. How frequent do you change your appliance if you have no leaks. I too use the CeraRing #8815 but I divide it in 4 pieces and roll each into a ring and place it around the middle circle to prevent leaks. So far it’s been working. Thank you for your suggestion
I too was told that less is better and found that to be true. I was way over engineering the whole contraption
because of dreading having leaks. What you do with the Ceraring sounds complicated! I change every 5 days feeling that I could go longer but I don't out of concern about UTIs. Have you tried the Adapt barrier extenders? I used them for the first couple of years of urostomy life(since 2020), then following the "less is better" I tried without and it was just fine. You might look into those.
I use a barrier spray after applying the powder and then a barrier pad to make sure all the powder has been covered. The one time I didn't make sure all the powder was treated with the barrier products, the coloplast pouch would not adhere. Trash time. The powder and barrier products are essential to keeping the areas from becoming red and irritated.
Because I live in the country, after showering I am able to walk on my back porch to let the sun dry me and expose the urostomy stoma to a little sunshine, no more than 15 minutes. It helps the natural healing of the skin.
I will try. Thank you for sharing
Sounds like a good idea if you can do it. What do you do to stop the output while the stoma is uncovered? I was told to leave it uncovered for about 30 minutes to let the skin breath. I haven’t done it in a while. Thank you for sharing
I always carry a towel or old wash cloth just in case, or use the small cup that comes with a pudding container, and when cleaned, will stick with the suction you can get with gently squeezing the container.
