Skin problems under Ostomy appliance

Posted by mariar55 @mariar55, Jul 8, 2025

I have a urostomy since Feb 2022 and have a lot of problems with the skin under the coloplast appliance. I have done allergy testing and I am not allergic to the appliance . Does anyone have this problem and what helps heal the skin?

I bought twelve white cotton wash cloths for the bag changing. No problem in the wash as I always rinse the cloths before the go into the washer. And I always use peroxide instead of bleach. Nothing to throw away and no extra cost.

Good idea. I am just squeamish, I guess.

You're welcome. Great ideas from the people who have to deal with pouches.

I use the Coloplast powder and skin barrier wipes and spray. Also use their adhesive remover and try to get as much of the old adhesive off as possible. Then I razor off any hairs, then wash the area with Ivory soap a few times ending up with rinsing thoroughly. Then the skin is ready for the powder and barrier spray. Bill's skin was red when I started installing his pouch around last November but is in really good condition now. He also had itching that mysteriously went away.

Have you tried using Flonase? Yes the nasal spray. lol. I spray it on my skin and my stoma every time I change the appliance. Be sure to let it dry good by waving your hand over it. It is an anti inflammatory and has been a wonderful solution for me.

My husband uses Flonase also. He has had good success with his urostomy.

Where do I get it in Canada? Is it a prescription that I have to get from my family doctor?
Thanks

In the US you can get it over the counter or by prescription. I’m not sure about Canada.

Bit off topic but I recently read about putting an activated charcoal capsule in the pouch to control odor. Ordered some from Amazon and I am very happy with the result. Not expensive. They reduce gas buildup and ballooning for me as well.
