Skin problems under Ostomy appliance
I have a urostomy since Feb 2022 and have a lot of problems with the skin under the coloplast appliance. I have done allergy testing and I am not allergic to the appliance . Does anyone have this problem and what helps heal the skin?

I have used the calamine lotion before. What skin prep do you apply?
Right now, Safe n Simple. Learned about calamine years ago from comments on a British Ostomy site.
When I first started I had very painful skin irritation from using a one piece Hollister system that didn't vent. Literally a baggie with an attached flange and no vent for gas. Horrible.
By the way, for me, using a generic antacid that is anti gas works well as a bag lubricant. Years ago the home health nurse suggested that I use mouth wash. Not a best choice for me at all.
I take a hot soaking tub bath with stoma completely exposed before changing out the flange. Have a hard plastic cover with a waistband that I use over the flange for showering. Not perfect but helpful. If I get the tape around the flange wet it leads to early failure.
flange tape dry
Great tips about the blow dryer! Not only does it help it stick. It helps me during a change to remove the sticky.
Thank you for the very thorough reply! I have been following your steps, including the alcohol wipes.
I did change system to Convatec.
I’ve not had any problems since!!

1 ReactionVery helpful!!
That’s what I was hoping for I don’t mind throwing the bags away each time. I probably only go a few times a day. And to alleviate the time and best I would pay for extra bags!!
Agree
I’m not going to let this consume me!

1 ReactionOne of the videos I watched was a young woman discussing her ostomy practices. She said that eating a couple of marshmallow a couple of hours before changing her pouch kept it from "doing its business" during the change. I tried, but only gave it an hour. There was a little "activity" but not much. Will try it again.
Also, I discovered a Box of Rags by Scott Tissue in the garage. I confiscated them and ordered another from Amazon. They are larger and much softer that paper towels, not very expensive, given the number in the box, and work beautifully for cleaning during my changing process. I honestly don't feel that it is sanitary using a wash cloth if it is going into the laundry with other items, and this solves the problem.

1 ReactionI bought twelve white cotton wash cloths for the bag changing. No problem in the wash as I always rinse the cloths before the go into the washer. And I always use peroxide instead of bleach. Nothing to throw away and no extra cost.
