Sick 31 yr old son

Posted by lydia1975 @lydia1975, Jan 14 11:34am

Desperate mom searching for help for my 31 yr old son with heart issues. He is smart, motivated, and a make things happen type of guy. He has dealt with medical issues for the last 4 months. From GI bleed (1 ltr of blood in his stomach) to an infection in one of his heart valves along with multiple transfusions, paracenthesis, and adema. It's been mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausting for him. All of this started from a tooth infection he did not know he had. Currently, he returned back to the ICU and is under dialysis. He was told they could not operate due to low platelets and was told his heart would fail around 3 weeks. My son can not accept this news, and neither can I. He is motivated to live. He has so much more life in him. I am seeking financial help and any excellent doctors, anywhere, that can shed some light in his situation.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dear @lydia1975, I would like to welcome you to Mayo Connect, and I also would like to let you know I am so very sorry for what you and your son are going through.
It sounds like a nightmare! No wonder you are desperate, any mother would be!
You have come to right place to look for answers, but this is a patient/caregiver support community so we can't dispense medical advice. We may have opinions or experience we can share.
I can only assume, which is not a good thing...that the hospital he is in has some sort of Case Management or Social Services? A Chaplin?
May I ask where you are located? Are you near a Center of Excellence?

It has been rough but right now I am in fight mode. My son is in Chandler, AZ. My heart and my gut tells me this isn't the final answer. He never had any health issues before this nightmare started. He was an active person, very motivated.

Hey there lydia, I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through right now. I have a 30-year-old son and can completely connect with you as to the trauma you must be feeling. I like your spirit of fight mode, if you feel something in your gut you go for it, you stick with it. I don't have much knowledge in any of these areas but is it not possible to give him platelets that he's low on through transfusion? Do you have support while you're going through these difficult times? As Debra mentioned - Hospital case manager, social worker or chaplain? Who is there to be your Advocate while you are advocating for your son?

@lydia1975, I'd like to add my welcome. I see that your momma bear is rearing its head and you're fighting for your son. Here are a few options to consider. You may have tried them already.

I completely agree with @karukgirl and @rwinney. I hope you can talk to a hospital social worker. They are there to help you and can be your quarterback for finding financial assistance and supporting you as well as your son.

My Help Navigator may be able to help you find free or low cost social worker services and more, check out this website and search engine called "My Help Navigator". https://myhelpnavigator.auntbertha.com/

If you would like to look into getting care at Mayo Clinic, you can talk to his team about getting a physician referral or ask if they ever consult with Mayo Clinic experts. You can also submit a request for an appointment yourself. See more info here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

- Insurance at Mayo Clinic https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/billing-insurance/insurance
- Charitable Care and Financial Assistance at Mayo Clinic https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/billing-insurance/financial-assistance

I bet this feels like everything is moving fast and slow at the same time.

Thank you for responding..... I've been on social media, even though I'm not a pro at it but I asked others to share my story and I've been reaching out to everyone and anyone that will listen and is able to help in any way. I'm definitely not giving up. I have reached to the Mayo clinic, doctors, holistic, etc.

I am so sorry for what your son is experiencing and what you are experiencing. Most hospitals have funds established to help those who cannot pay for their care. You also may wish to set up a "Go Fund Me" to cover additional expenses. I am guessing your son has many doctors in different specialities who are providing care. You may wish to ask his doctors if they can seek a consult with a specialist in the area most life threatening for your son. I wish your son good luck with his medical journey back to health.
