Salty tast in my mouth from diagnosed with Sjogren's
I was tested positive for Sjogren in 2019. My condition is very odd, other than dry mouth, I have salty taste in my mouth all day since 2021. I went to see a ENT, they tested me for nose cancer which turned out to be negative, they did biopsy on my mouth, they can't find anything wrong. I went to Irvine Clinic Research and did another biopsy on my mouth and same result. They found nothing. I am a 60 years old & in top shape of my life (work out 4-5 times a week), no health issues & not taking another prescription drugs since I am so healthy, except the salty taste in my mouth. I have not been able to taste food like I used to. Everything I eat taste salty. I am wondering anyone from this group has the same issue like me, please share how you combat this problem.

@neisie13 , yes I still have the pervasive taste issue however it is now salty and not bitter. Bitter was better than metallic so I feel there’s improvement. The thing that stands out to me is that if it’s permanent, then how does it keep changing? Will it go from salty to sweet? Idk……..
@celia16 Yes, anything has to be better than metallic but I find the salty is better than the bitter/sour and seems easier to mask with gum but nothing is better than normal taste!!!! I have no idea why it keeps changing. I wish it would change to sweet.....that would definitely be better than what we taste now. Maybe a doctor will read our posts and tell us the miracle cure!!!! Have a nice holiday season!!

1 ReactionIt’s probably been going on for about two years now. The salty taste tends to overpower anything sweet, so I end up eating more sweet foods just to balance it out, which obviously goes against the advice to cut back on sugar.

1 Reaction@autumn1917 Yes, I understand just trying to balance out the taste. I received some candy for the holidays and knew I shouldn't eat them but they help at the time. It's after I eat them that the taste goes right back to salty or sometimes bitter but recently it's been salty again. I get these assorted crackers at Aldi that are not very salty and they really mask the salty taste at the time and I would eat those as my only meal if I could. They taste good at the time and don't overwhelm the salty taste but of course I can't just eat those. For some reason Asian food does not agree with my taste at all. I think there are just too many flavors. Does your tongue look normal? Mine is always red and inflamed on the front part. I've shown the dentist and she doesn't seem to feel that it's that abnormal but I think it's gotten worse so I'll see her next month and see what she says......

1 Reaction@minnesota10 I am not taking any medications at all. I am very healthy & in top shape of my life. That's what's bugging me. Every ENT I went to, he/she can't help me. The last ENT kind of gave up on me because she has no solutions to my problem.
I don't think anyone can understand how debilitating this is except us, who are going through it everyday. At first they told me that I am just not drinking enough and when drinking much more didn't help at all I was prescribed saliva enhancers which didn't work and then gabapentin which didn't work. Nothing helps and no one has anymore suggestions!!
Has anyone gotten any relief from any symptoms by using Hydrocodone?
@neisie13 I totally agree with you. I suffer in silence daily. On top of constant salty taste in my mouth, I also have mouth sores on my tongue every other week. The mouth sores will last for a week and went away and reappear the following week. So I struggle between the salty taste and mouth sores daily. Sometimes I did not even feel like eating because the mouth sores in my mouth were so excruciatingly painful. My brother told me to try a chinese herbs called the Watermelon Powder Spray to release the pain from mouth sores. I have been using it for over 3 years now so that I can eat food. I wish I can just pop some pills to get rid of it. I know it's a wishful thinking.
I haven’t had any sores to deal with, but with the taste issue…..it seems the problem is not in the mouth. The cause lies elsewhere. At least that’s my nonexpert opinion.
@salinanwhispers Luckily I don't have the mouth sores but the tip of my tongue is always inflamed. I have a dentist appointment next week so I'll talk to her about it. Has the dentist seen the sores in your mouth? There may be a special rinse that could be prescribed.
