Reclast infusion side effects?
I had the Reclast infusion 5 months ago in my left arm. I have started having pain in that arm now, with loss of strength. Has this happened to anyone else?

It depends on a lot of different factors but as it’s been stated here the last couple of years seems to be if you are in osteoporosis then starting with forteo, Tymlos Evenity followed by reclast, fosamax Prolia etc…many different variations for each patient …osteonecrosis happens rarely but again its patient dependent …if you hav3 healthy teeth and gums it’s less but still ther3 as a possibility nonetheless…ironically treated with Tymlos sometimes.
As many have said a fractured spine can be a whole lot worse than the alternative…it’s not an easy choice…
@osteopatient2026 I read that sometimes Evenity is given after 2years of Tymlos, that may be another option. OR.. short term oral Fosamax ( 1 year) hopefully wouldn’t cause teeth/jaw problems . After the 1 year of Fosamax hopefully another round of Tymlos. Your thoughts?
Yes…there is some thinking by some doctors (they all seem to have differing opinions) that it’s a reasonable approach. Again it depends on a patient and what their individual conditions are. TScore, kidneys other organs…previous cancer or existing conditions. Everyone is different…
On the osteonecrosis subject…generally that is caused by existing dental issues, poor hygiene, etc. A general dentist will or should refer a patient to a specialist (oral surgeon or at least someone experienced with osteonecrosis) before beginning a regimen of that class of drugs that do have a known history of Osteonecrosis…Tymlos is one drug used to treat it ironically. There is a special mouth wash used to keep your mouth clean as well.
Chlorhexidine gluconate rinse is commonly recommended for osteonecrosis of the jaw to reduce infection risk. Evidence for their effectiveness is based on expert opinion rather than definitive trials however.
Again if you are in severe osteoporosis your treatment will vary. Fosamax generally won’t help much if you are like me …my spine was -4.8- -5.1 hip was -3.1…the current approach was to try Tymlos or forteo (or Evenity which last year the doctor didn’t have enough experience with) now after a lot more people using it they seem to prescribing it more. There is better compliance with the once a month injection…so many variables…
I’m not a doctor although my husband went to med school and his brother and sister are. They can’t even agree on a lot of things!
I found some good info here… a few members have really scoured the info and found some indispensable info.

1 Reaction@osteopatient2026 I did what gently posted plus one extra day of 8 8oz cups of water, 650 mg Tylenol every 4 hours I think. Other than a bad headache (very short lived, on day 5) and maybe a little tired no problem. Asked doc for a slower drip; he told me to call infusion center. Infusion center said never heard of that. In and out in 30 minutes, start to finish, including time to make sure you don't have a reaction. I believe actual infusion was 15 minutes (that's what Novartis specifies on the drug literature). Just an FYI in case you do need to follow up with Reclast.

2 Reactions@gently I am not using bone markers. It's never been suggested. Also, I initially misspoke. It was Evenity I failed before Reclast and that caused similar bone pain, not Prolia. I'm going to ask my endo about bone markers. Thanks for the question.

1 Reactionhi carole,
most of our doctors aren't using bone markers. You might find the Doug Lucas video interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch I'm not shilling for him so I have to add don't buy anything.

2 Reactions@jozer I'm glad you are doing well. I do not understand the hesitancy of infusion centers to do a slower infusion. I have my Reclast infusions done at a major medical center, and they have no problem doing a 45 minute infusion if I ask for it. When my doc puts in the order it automatically says 30 minutes, but he just tells me to ask for the 45. I really do think it makes a difference.

4 ReactionsI was using Tymlos while still working but got terrible heart palpations so dr. switched me to Forteo which was great. Too expensive once I retired so switched to Prolia shots which were great. Moved out of state and specialist suggested I could have an infusion just once a year. My bad for not asking for more information. Had I asked the name, I'd have learned it was bisphosphonates which I NEVER wanted in my system. Too late. I had the infusion 3 weeks ago and had horrible flu symptoms for the next 3 or 4 days - thankfully no nausea. However since then I have had awful pounding headaches and neck pain since then. I'm living on Tylenol, sleeping a lot, and limited energy. Going for a contrast MRI next week and really don't expect any answers. Next year I'll go back to Prolia.
@llander1966 I would def go with Prolia - even moreso since you had issues with Fosomax - reclast is the same thing - biphosphonates. I had my first and only reclast infusion a few weeks ago with terrible flu like symptoms [but no nausea] and have mostly been housebound since then because of continuin pounding headaches. I can do one errand or 1 or 2 tasks in the house some days and then my energy is zapped. Had absolutely no reaction to Prolia. Both drugs work differently on the bones.

1 Reaction@bswnyca, some people get relief from Reclast pains with a five day steroid pack. Your infusion may be effective for two years.
