Pseudomonas infections

Posted by sarahlynn1960 @sarahlynn1960, Mar 11 1:53pm

Hi,
I have pseudomonas. One is 2+ mucoid and the other is +smooth. The pulmonologist has prescribed Levaquin, and I’m afraid of it due to the potential tendon side effects. She says it’s the only drug that treats this stuff. She told me about this potential side effect, but said it was rare and she had never had a patient who had a rupture. I’m 65. Anyone who has used Levaquin, I’m interested in if it knocked the pseudo back, whether you had side effects, and whether you know of any other drugs that work on this without this risk. Thanks!

Hi. I had pseudomonas and Levoquin got rid of it. Because I am a “ complicated “ case I take Levoquin twice weekly and nebulize up to four times daily. Hope that helps you with your question. I have had MAC, RSV, and most recently MRSA pneumonia. But the pseudomonas has never come back. Irene5

@kaybast It is crazy how our lungs become such a welcome environment for unwanted bacteria. At least when I had aspergillosis (forgot that one) that was easily treatable. However, the treatment was lengthy and required blood drawn for Vfend levels. (Voriconazole ). That is why nebulizing is so important. Irene5

@jenny0822 Hi Jenny0822. Like MAC, pseudomonas is an opportunistic bacterial infection that gets in our lungs. It can also be in other places, but people with MAC are more susceptible to other bacterial lung infections such as pseudomonas . The good news is that it is way more treatable than MAC. PS I have a daughter named Jenny with a y :). (Irene5)

How are you managing the ruptured Achilles tendon. I have had Achilles tendonitis for over a year now and have had no luck replacing it with PT or dry needling. I’ve taken tons of Levaquin over the years which can cause tendon issues.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the antibiotics. I also have recurring Pseudonomos My ob/gyn found it. Every year it acts up with light spotting and I was put on 500 mg twice daily of Cipro. That would stop the spotting but it would always come back after a year Did this in 2023 and 2024. This year it’s back but my infectious disease Dr decided it’s colonized and I should not have any treatment with antibiotics unless I get more symptoms such as fever, etc. he’s worried about developing a resistance to the antibiotics. He also said that 500 mg of Cipro that the ob/gyn prescribed isn’t the correct dose. It needed to be a higher dose. If I develop additional symptoms treatment would be IV antibiotics.

@positivethinking morning . . I had 4 infections last year, sinus, UTI, Lung and Eye and was on Zosyn IV for 2 wks. Now this year the Pseudomonas has colonized and im back on Zosyn for 3 wks ….only have a sinus infection this time around . A culture will be done next week to determine if there is any improvement . I do have lumbar back issues and chronic bursitis in both shoulders and both hips and ruptured Achilles tendon . I have had some pain this time around in those areas also.
Hav3 my fingers crossed for a good culture result ! Good luck to all ! Kay B.

You can consider IV options instead of the Levaquin. You do not necessarily need hospitalization for it. I have done the Meropenem as an out patient at my local hospital.

@irenea8 Meropenem DIDNT Touch my pseudomonas. I am on levoquin and have tendon issues. My doctor put me in a boot to protect my tendons. I refused Tobramycin because it’s otototic and hurts kidneys. It kills the cilia in our ears.
We are to the point where we need strong drugs and have to make tough decisions.
