Propranolol to add to Ativan

Posted by frouke @frouke, Mar 13 2:27pm

I recently was prescribed Propranolol to add to Ativan, I am feeling Inter dose withdrawal and I'm worried about not being able to start on another Benzodiazepine, I know that Vallium is the best choice but I used it years ago and the effects wore off rapidly until I ended up on a high dose. Thankfully the internet is useful and I learned that there's a reasonable cause for this, I know that Klonopin can also be used but the doctor offered me Propranolol to ease the withdrawal effects, my concern is that it's not highly recommended for people with asthma, there's better beta blockers like atterol but the doctor doesn't take kindly to suggestions? I'm not sure how to manoeuvre this issue without offending him and doctors are scarce across the border?..

I was once prescribed Propandanol. I chose to never take it. My Dr. Raised my Donezipiel and Fluvoxamine. I also have alprazalom if i need it. Good luck

I was placed on propranolol many years ago and it produced horrible mental side effects. All I remember is being on the phone with the doctor who prescribed it describing the mental and visual effects it was creating. It took a couple of days to get it out of my system - very long days. Be sure to read about all possible side effects as you consider your doctor's recommendation.

I'm really happy that I reached out to get help with this drug, I was very skeptical to take it, there's other options that don't cause problems with asthma like Atterol. I must admit that I have always been an bit phobic with medication, they are necessary for some people and help with life, when it comes to coping with mental health it's always challenging. I have a new doctor and I'm blessed to get one but sadly he doesn't have a lot of knowledge with medication which makes the challenge of finding what is helpful a lot harder.

I was on atenolol years ago for anxiety. I now take Propanolol. I am not really intimidated by doctors. My suggestion is that you let the doctor know that you are part of a support group moderated by the Mayo Clinic and you have had others with your same "stuff" take...(atenolol or propanolol) Doctors are concerned about Benzos, and rightly so, but if taken correctly, as you know, they are helpful. Good luck. I know it is frustrating.

@diverdown1 Thank you for the advice, I never used to be intimidated by my doctor but the new one is not at all open to suggestions and the last time I came to see him I was verbally berated and it doesn't help my anxiety, he seems to feel that I think I know more than him and believe me that's not true.

I could not deal with that. I know changing doctor's is a pain, but that is what I would do. You are paying him. You are probably more patient than I am. I am so sorry that is the situation.

@diverdown1 , Thank you, I am going to try your suggestion about referencing the Mayo clinic because this holds more credibility than telling him that I do a lot of research, sometimes he refers me to another doctor from the clinic and it really makes a difference because he likes to hear what I have learned and even said that I'm making his job easier, unfortunately I don't have control over who I want to see when I go there.

@jbwhiskeyleehapp , This is what I did too, I had always heard from my previous doctor that this class of drugs, Beta Blockers), can affect asthma, I know that there are other ones that are safer. I don't want to start on another medication that' going to cause me mental and physical turmoil, what's the point, I end up worse in the long run, thank you for your response, I've read from others who used it that the side effects are awful and I'm blessed to have the help here that I needed, Amen.

@frouke you’re smart to be concerned about your asthma as it seems the doctor is not. And yes seek a different provider you can communicate with who treats you like an individual and not a number. You deserve better treatment.
