Prostate Artery Embolization for BPH. Anyone have it done?

Posted by dmp08 @dmp08, Apr 16, 2023

PAE can be done through wrist or femoral artiry. Usually catheter is not needed. Catheter is for as a marker by some radialogists. I am wondering if it can be done without any sedation? Thanks.

Did PAE yesterday morning July 7 2025. So far so good (at one day out). It was long, they were real careful to avoid some vessels that went to bladder and that added significantly to time of the procedure.

Day 20 PAE update:

Just now getting past the painful urination. Weaker stream than before procedure and getting up 5 times per night, one or two before. So, I'm worse than I was before the procedure, but it's slowly improving every day.

Doctor said max results occur around 3 months, so I'm really hopeful I can get off Alfuzosin, it's tough on the eyes and gives me a constant dull headache.

Hang in there brothers, you will be good as new in due time. Depending on size of prostate and plenty of other factors recovering proceeds slowly in beginning and before you know you will be saying, wow, this is working! I went through 10 days of living hell and then daily improvements. Three years out and it’s like I’m 30 again.

Success rate is pretty high as I understand it. Good luck!

Unfortunately the downside of PAE is that after some time you need to repeat it, and the incidence rate of sucess is a little above 50%. I have to make HOLEP and I expect not to have BPH symptoms anymore. Bur after 110 days, I´m still feeling burning sensation when peeing, urgency and frequency.

I am sorry to hear of your symptoms after so much time. I know the success rate is not perfect first time around but I truly hope as time progresses you have no more burning. I had it in the beginning, about 10-11 days. My doc said full recovery is usually 6 months.

I know HOLEP is also considered effective but again, not all the time. My urologist recommended it for me and said it is important that a very experienced physician does it.

All the best to you and please keep us updated.

Thanks for the encouragement! You just made my day. Only got up 5 times last night and the pain while urinating is GONE. Day 21

Good news av! If I remember correctly I was still getting up a number of times but once I turned the corner with pain it was off to the races!

Day 1 for me (home after morning procedure). Been on finasteride for years and want off (libido and ED concerns) so PAE seemed a good option. Process was simple and painless. Expecting a first night of lots of wake up calls. Short term meds (5) from procedure to start later today, and be in full swing tomorrow. (63 with 5ish? Years of BPH …. Did self-evaluate test of AUA before process this morning and scored 23 - hoping that improves!). Ok with repeating this in a few years if it works this time.

Well we have the same week. I am doing real well after three days, not getting up much to go and not much issue. They gave me methylprednisolone for 6 days which I don't like much, especially that first day, but taking less now so it isn't so bad. Also got phenazopyridine for any bladder issue and cipro plus naproxen.

Glad to track with another traveling same journey.

Why did you pick PAE, if you don’t mind my asking?
