Prostate Artery Embolization for BPH. Anyone have it done?

Posted by dmp08 @dmp08, Apr 16, 2023

PAE can be done through wrist or femoral artiry. Usually catheter is not needed. Catheter is for as a marker by some radialogists. I am wondering if it can be done without any sedation? Thanks.

@anonmike

I read your earlier post. Glad for your outcome; not for the 10 days of bad pain. Would it have helped to self-catheter in those 10 days? 2 liters is about 60 oz, tough. I do self-catheter now and maybe that would help in the recovery? So pleased you are doing well.

Hi Mike, I just had my PAE 9 days ago. My prostate started at 250ml. I had the same difficult recovery but fortunately had the ability to self-catheter. I did this twice, in the middle of the night. My doctor wasn't thrilled that I did this but said, "hey, do what you have to do". He said it would just slow the recovery process. Each time I released 600 ml.
My Doctor, Dr. Mouli of Northwestern was absolutely excellent!
Couple of suggestions: Eat good food (in small quantity) before and after. Things get blocked up and that just adds to the misery. Also, don't travel for a few days if you can. My home is 6 hours from Northwestern (Chicago) and, even though I had good assistance, it was rough!
I have full confidence in this procedure with an experienced doctor. Can't wait for full recovery!
