Newly diagnosed with Macular Degeneration

Posted by Tracey001 @tracey001, Aug 18, 2011

I just found out that i have Macular Degeneration possibly Macular Dystorphy and I am scared to death. I haven't eaten in three days and I feel a huge sence of hoplessness. I would really like to talk to others who have it and how they are coping

I too would encourage you to grab onto treatment when that is being suggested.
The best way to slow and possibly stop disease progression is with early treatment.... please don't wait until your vision is compromised.
Be proactive!
A dear friend is now getting the shots... she said that the thought of the shots was much worse than the shots themselves.
All the best to you!

Hello @btednes2015. I wanted to bring you into an existing discussion on this topic, so you will notice I have moved your post here:
- Newly diagnosed with Macular Degeneration: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/newly-dignosed-with-macular-degeneration-and-scared-to-death/

Members like @mreenrose @decabea @newyorknill and @annemcilvaine have shared some about their diagnosis and may be able to come back in and share with you too.

Can I confirm why you are reluctant so that I may best help connect you with others?

I’m hesitant because my doctor isn’t clear on what it supposed to do in one hand, he said it may make it worse and the other may help that and then it’ll be a series of injections. Right now it’s not bad it’s been over a year since I’ve been diagnosed, it seems to be very slow and on the vitamins and I do eat pretty healthy, I’m just wondering what would happen if I just let it go on its own

Not reluctant, I post under Decabea, wrote about new on market treatment for dry, my experience with doctor whose treatment schedule I did not agree with and my wet Mac experiences. Read the posts each am too

Hi, sorry there must be a misunderstanding I have dry AMD. Our injection is also used for dry AMD?

In that case, your doctor must be recommending the new injected medication for advanced dry AMD.

Is this a common treatment for dry age macular degeneration? I’m concerned because he said it’s possible it will make it worse. I’m not sure it’s worth it.

Well i understand the feeling I was diagnosed while having a check for cataract
It's now almost a year i was treated with Avastin injection intraocular
It's really annoying painful but after two days you keep going on one forgets
My vision has not deteriorated improved slightly so now the specialist recommended ILEA newer drug
Not yet received
I get sad but then i meditate thing good and accept
Maybe medicine cannot cure it really but at least stop loss of vision and in some cases improve

I am so sorry you have to go through that. May I ask your age and where you live?

I am glad to hear that you haven't noticed any changes in your vision for a year. MDD is Major Depressive Disorder. I do the Anselar Grid test everyday and will have a test to look at my retinas on the 28th of this month. Thanks for the reply. It lifted my spirits.
