Wegovy (semaglutide) and Nausea. Any ideas?

Posted by srwolfe @srwolfe, Sep 23, 2024

I have lost 47 lbs since starting wegovy. Started with the lowest dose of 0.25 and have gone up each month. I am now at the highest dose of 2.4 mg. Had a little nausea first week but have tolerated the medication real well. Unfortunately that’s not the case with the 2.4 mg dose. Nausea is real bad for days. The constipation is a big issue for first time since starting wegovy. Any ideas please let me know

@roch I have been taking the shot for eight weeks and have yet to lose 1 pound and I am eating mindfully. When I was on Zepbound , pounds were coming off. Any suggestions?

@daniellet
If the shots are not working, I would recommend contacting your provider to discuss your concerns.

I am tagging @lisalucier if she has suggestions,

Is it Wegovy that you're currently on? Is there a reason you stopped Zepbound?

@daniellet - I had similar experiences, but just the opposite. I switched from semaglutide (Wegovy) shots to tirzepatide (Zepbound) shots due to bad GI side effects with the semaglutide.

I lost 53 pounds on the semaglutide, but had only lost 1 pound by the time my insurance coverage cut off right when I got to the top dose of tirzepatide. I then stopped that shot, as my personal costs without insurance coverage would have gotten really unwieldy.

Would the tirzepatide have worked for me if I'd have kept going? Quite possibly. But I don't know.

My husband lost no weight at all on semaglutide till he got to the very top dosage.

So, all I can say from my experience as a non health professional also watching some others we know do these shots is that it's variable by person.

Have you mentioned what you talked about here with your semaglutide weight loss to your provider? If so, what did they say?

Impressive weight loss. You're not alone with side effect of nausea, Abby McWaters, Registered Dietitian at Mayo just posted in Weight Management Blog on Mayo Connect with suggestions to prevent or at least reduce nausea.

Have you tried any of the suggestions in article?

Thanks for reporting it. Looks like websites were rearranged. Not sure where the original article ended up, but this newer article addresses the same issues.

I will follow up with the Mayo team on updating the comment.
