Questions about Reclast for osteoporosis.

Posted by phoebejo @phoebejo, Apr 16, 2016

My endocrinologist has recently recommended Reclast for my osteoporosis. I have TMJD and also type 2 diabetes which I believe puts me at greater risk for a heart condition. My research indicates that side effects of Reclast can do damage to the heart (atrial fibrillation) and bone disfuregurement in the jaw. I. Would like to know when Reclast was introduced and the efficacy stated in percentages. I have seen information that indicates fatal outcomes for small numbers but nothing to compare that too in terms of successful treatment.

I had 2 Reclast infusions over the last 4 years because I cannot take the pills. My mother and grandmother broke their hips without falling because of osteoporosis. Healthy incredibly active women who ate a huge amount of green leafy vegetables & exercised daily over decades and still ended up with it. My sister walks 2 hours a day and does yoga and now at 64 has osteoporosis. I had undiagnosed celiacs for decades so I was being malnourished without knowing it, so I am now being treated for bone loss. After my first Reclast infusion, I had flu like symptoms for 3 days. Before the second infusion I was told to take an Advil before the infusion and one when I got home. I was just a bit achy. I saw no increase in my bone mass in the first two years BUT I HAD NO BONE LOSS. In the third year my score increased by 3 points. I will need to do Reclast again next year to keep my bone mass where it is. Good luck with your choice!

I have osteoporosis and received the Reclast infusion on May 13th of this year. My joint pain is becoming worse than before the infusion. I'm 71 y/o so this could be due to the aging process, however just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My endocrinologist wants me to take another infusion in the spring of 2024. I'm not sure I want to do this. My endocrinologist also told me that there's no pain with osteoporosis. She's in her early 20s.

I am faced with getting Reclast, question for you did the joint pain eventually go away for you? I can handle side effects if they eventually go away, but if they NEVER go away, that's a different story.

Hello. Yes the joint pain did go away. I can't say exactly how long it lasted and to be fair, I do have some joint discomfort due to the osteoarthritis anyway. I just thought it was more severe in the major joints, with generalized aching for something like 2 -3 months. I'm good now and facing another infusion in May. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it. I'm doing some research on supplements, vitamins, etc. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I, too, will be getting Reclast, probably in June.
All my Evenity anxiety (that has been without side effects) has been transferred to Reclast anxiety. 😳

I also have Celiac disease (diagnosed at 45, now 65) and really wish that someone had told me that there was no way around not getting osteoporosis. I just had my first Reclast infusion. Had horrible reactions even with plenty of fluids and Tylenol. Fever, chills, holy cow! 72 hrs later still feel like crap and my stomach is way messed up. Metallic taste in my mouth. Hoping tomorrow is better.

Thank you. It seems like the folks who did the advance water drinking, Claritin and Tylenol did a little better re: side effects. I appreciate your reply.

So sorry to hear this and scary for me as I try to decide if I will have the Reclast infusion or insist on Fosomax, which I tolerated very well many years ago.

Yes. The first shots made me feels tired - really tired - the next day. After that - shots #2-8 seemed to have no effect.
