Questions about Reclast for osteoporosis.

Posted by phoebejo @phoebejo, Apr 16, 2016

My endocrinologist has recently recommended Reclast for my osteoporosis. I have TMJD and also type 2 diabetes which I believe puts me at greater risk for a heart condition. My research indicates that side effects of Reclast can do damage to the heart (atrial fibrillation) and bone disfuregurement in the jaw. I. Would like to know when Reclast was introduced and the efficacy stated in percentages. I have seen information that indicates fatal outcomes for small numbers but nothing to compare that too in terms of successful treatment.

My endocrinologist is saying he does not support me having reclast after my 12 months of evenity because I was on alendronate prior to evenity.

@gravity3 That’s puzzling. Did your endocrinologist suggest a different medication? My endocrinologist told me I could go back on alendronate (I took it for 5 years and was “off” that medication for two years before starting on Evenity) but we would first try other medications such as Reclast or Prolia. What’s the reasoning behind your endocrinologist’s recommendation to avoid alendronate?

So sorry to hear this and scary for me as I try to decide if I will have the Reclast infusion or insist on Fosomax, which I tolerated very well many years ago.

I was on alendronate for 5 years prior to evenity but with no significant break. He does ot want me back on a bisphosphonate. I will be speaking to him a our this before my remaining 6 mo of evenity are up.

I am alarmed when I hear so many describe fractures and spontaneous fractures while on prolia.

I just had an appointment with my endocrinologist and he wants me to try either Fosamax or Reclast. I am in good health but am terrified reading the side effects. He has asked me to do a blood test and 24 hr urine test before we discuss which treatment would be best. I’m scared! 😱
