Posted by formydad @formydad, Apr 24, 2019

He is getting surgery tomorrow to remove mass have no idea if cancerous- assuming they will send off – doc said removal may”jump start his kidney which he was unaware is not functioning.. he had prostate cancer and has brach treatment i believe – that cancers gone but i have been reading that having had radiation for it may lead to bladder cancer – anyone experience this?

@tdrohan

What complications are possible in bladder cystoscope ? Infections. Perforations?

@tdrohan, you may be interested in my long experience with cystoscopy. I have had regular cystoscope exams for nearly 10 years after removal of several papillary tumors from the lining of my bladder. The tumors were discovered during a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) procedure, which is an expansion of cystoscopy, adding a tool to snip off prostate tissue to permit its removal through the urethra. In all of that — including more than 20 cystoscope exams over the years — I had had no repercussions other than minor temporary pain as the 'scope passes through the valve into the bladder. Infections are prevented with 1) germicide application to the external opening in the urethra and with 2) a good antibiotic taken before the procedure begins. I was told at the outset that perforations almost never happen, and when they do, it results from an unexpected kink in the urethra, which is extremely rare. Martin

My Dad got to recovery- about 5pm was in surgery from 12-to 430 -🥺 had two blood transfusions the wall of his bladder had a mass size of his fist through it and everything was plastered together on that side of his body lots of scar tissue from a prior hernia surgery and the kidney removal- it was also plastered to the colon so he cut it all out along with the bladder and anything that looked like something that didnt belong-they did not have to cut any of the intestine for a urine tube – they just used the tube from his kidney straight out- which will hugely cut down on recovery time- 😊The docs will be following up week – 2 weeks 3 months will do scans to see if any recurrence. 😳
So very thankful and Praising God for the doctors and keeping my dad through his surgery continuing to trust Him for his recovery!
Thank you for praying for him and please keep his recovery in your prayers! I was excited to read about the stealth belt- seems like a terrific option for my Dad or anyone! I sent info to him and i told him my sisiter and i would like to go in and get some for him – ill have to have him give measurements and see which appliance for the hole in back but i was grateful to find this on this site so helpful! As usual!!

Any advice on recovery im all ears!

@formydad So glad to hear you and your dad and rest of family made it through the surgery! I was wondering all day yesterday. The best advice I can give for recovery is to listen to the drs and follow their suggestions. They know your dad's case and what will be best for him. There may be others here who have a more personal experience with this type of surgery and can add something. We will continue to pull for everyone, and look forward to the progress reports you post!

@formydad I am so glad everything went so well! You and your mom must be totally exhausted! As for recovery, it just takes time. Steps around the house, then walks around the block. And taking strong, deep breaths to prevent pneumonia! Was your dad sent home with an inspirometer (plastic breathing machine)? He should use it every hour. He will also probably have home health nurses from the hospital for awhile. They are really great and can answer specific questions your mom might have. I think everything will go well, especially with you keeping watch! Will you keep us informed of the progress? Becky

@formydad I hope when you read this, that your dad is resting more comfortably now, and feeling better today. And that you have rested, and your mom has recovered from the food poisoning. What a rotten thing to do, take her jewelry! Any word on that, yet?

@formydad What a night your mom had. I can’t imagine. Was security notified about the missing jewelry? Maybe ‘someone’ took it to the lost and found. You might also want to contact the patient representative. He/she can follow up for you.
Are your parents doing better this morning? What is planned for your dad today?

@formydad I hope things are going better today with both of your parents. I am so sorry about your mother's jewelry. They do always say to not bring jewelry or anything of value so I guess that's why. I had a pair of brand new expensive ($120) UGG slippers on when I was taken down for an endoscopy. When I got back to my room they were nowhere to be found. They had been a recent gift so I was very upset. I learned, from then on I didn't bring anything of value other than my phone and IPad. I realize that is probably small compared to jewelry but both are upsetting. I hope the jewelry does turn up.
