Muscle "pulls" due to statin?
So, I have been on rousavastatin for maybe 7 years and I have had several instances where I have "pulled" a hamstring muscle just walking.... briskly, but just walking, not running. I have read many threads about statins and general muscle pain and weakness, but none seem to be what is happening to me. I am fit and active riding bikes, walking, and hiking, etc. but then all of a sudden on a walk, always when well warmed up and long into it, one of my hamstrings will "pop", not audibly but painfully, like I would occassionally get when sprinting back in my youth. This is very frustrating because these are really slow to heal and take me out of my workout routine. Anyone else here on statins experience this?

I cannot take Repatha because I am allergic to Latex (Hypersensitive stage 4) and it can give me awful side effects. I am going to try Pitavastatin again because I am not sure if my stabbing pain in my leg was because of driving for 10 hrs at the same time I was taking the statin or if it was the statin. So now that I won’t travel that long distance, maybe I should try it again to see if I get those side effects or not. Medicines always give problems to patients. The pharmaceutical companies keep manufacturing drugs of any kind and their side effects make the patient get more meds to alleviate those side effects. It is a Gold Mine for these companies!
I just had a discussion with a cardiologist this morning and I will be trying a different statin. Ive been having muscle weakness and mentioned it at my appt. She gave me a couple options. Im hoping for improvement.
Just to update this thread now that I have been taking CoQ10 for a month... I believe it is really helping me. My hamstring muscles feel much more supple and elastic when I walk and I no longer feel like I am walking uphill (on flat ground) or like walking in quicksand. This improvement has become noticeable just this week. The hamstrings seem to be functioning so much better, really noticeable on the pull portion of the stride. My pace has quickened by about 1 1/2 minutes per mile with no more perceived exertion. And best of all no pain or no sense of imminent muscular damage.
As a side observation, I had had a similar issue with my biceps muscles before I started the CoQ10 where after a 10 minute phone call I could not straighten out my arm for 5 or 10 minutes. No more. So, I am going to call this a success story for now and keep taking the CoQ10. I should have listened to my Cardiologist in the first place when he put me on the statin.
I too was lax in taking the coq10 and was only taking 100mg a day when I did take it. My spasms from the statins were so bad it would interrupt my sleep. I read on this blog how it has helped many and that 200mg/day is recommended and that statins work best at night so I started taking them together at night. It has made a world of difference and I rarely get muscle cramps anymore. Thanks for sharing.
My rosuvastatin script also says to take it at bedtime, or thereabouts. As for the CoQ10, the bottle says to take it with food, so I have been usually taking it at lunchtime. I am using the "Ultra" formuation that is supposedly more bioavailable. 200mg.
