More severe colds after Covid?

Posted by Laura Dropps @ldropps, Nov 9, 2021

I am just on the tail end (I hope) of a week long upper respiratory infection. This is one of the worst colds/viruses that I've ever had. It's my first non-covid illness since I've had Covid last November. I'm wondering if my immune system is not 100% after fighting Covid. Any thoughts?

@ldropps, that's an interesting hypothesis. Both my mom and I got hit with a cold virus these past weeks and neither of us has had COVID. I have to say it was a cold like no other - really tough, especially the fatigue. I didn't have the upper respiratory infection, but my mom did. She's still getting over it. Another hypothesis may be that this strain of cold virus is a bad one.

I've noticed headlines in media like this one "Experts warn of potential resurgence of common cold viruses ahead of schedule" or this
"As coronavirus recedes, colds and common viruses are back — especially among children" https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/06/16/increase-colds-rsv-kids/

How are you feeling today?

@colleenyoung You are probably right that it's just a whooper of a cold. I'd like to think that my immune system is not running on empty. I'm sorry that you and your mom were both sick. I'm over the hump, but still need cough syrup at night and I still get the sweats at various times during the day. What has been a blessing is we received a lasagna from Lasagna Love. Now that I can eat more than just gelatin it's been nice to have a homemade meal that I didn't have to make myself.

It’s possible both are true. I’d like to hear from other long haulers too. In my case, I felt suddenly better one day. My mom’s lung related symptoms are hanging on. Comfort food like lasagne cooked by someone else sounds like a great remedy.

I know this is an old discussion, but I just got my first cold following a diagnosis of Long Covid, and while I don’t necessarily think I’m having an abnormally dramatic immune response, I definitely feel terrible. All of my efforts to eat well and stay hydrated are failing today because all I can do is sleep. It’s frustrating, and it heightens all of the frustration and sadness around watching my pre-Covid life slip away from me. Some days are okay, some days are bad. Today is bad.

I've caught a cold and norovirus (gifts from hubby) since catching covid last March. The cold took about a week to disappear, and I noticed my LC was better after the cold (maybe my immune system was distracted by an actual invading virus?). I hadn't caught a cold or flu for years because of masking/distance. I hope you recover soon from the cold, sometimes when you haven't had a cold or flu a long time your immune system slaps you around more. These LC and cold/flu waiting games do get depressing.

For three years post-covid I didn't get a cold. I'm on my 3rd post-covid cold/virus - all have been longer than normal and more intense than normal. This URI is now in week 4! Covid negative. I feel awful and just keep wondering when it's going to end - especially on top of Long Covid. I have been diagnosed with immune dysfunction.

I am now five days into my cold, and I’m still experiencing a slew of intense symptoms. Normally after a couple of intense days I would be starting to feel better, but I so think that Long Covid is doing something terrible to my immune system, making it extremely overreactive but also maybe ineffectual. My insomnia that developed after Covid has been especially severe during this cold, which has to be making everything worse.
