Metallosis patients / heavy metal poisoning specialist
To those of you who have experienced metallosis, did you seek out a heavy metal poisoning specialist to help you through? Or did your ortho know the procedure to follow?

I received my test results. My Mercury, Gadolinium and Lead are in the Red zone. I have several others in the Yellow zone. I'll have to see what the doctor says and prescribes as a treatment.
Hmm, as far as I know, none of these metals are used in implants. How do you think you encountered them?
I honestly don't know. I'm also not really sure how to interpret the results. The resu L ts from urine and stool indicate what I'm eliminating, while the blood test results indicate what is remaining in my system. I'll sure have a lot of questions Monday when I see the doctor.
One thing that might have contributed to these high levels might have been the surgery i had in May where my humerus was cut open to remove the long stem from my previous revision. I think many metals are stored up in bones.
What kind of doctor are you seeing? Why were the tests ordered?
He is a Dr of internal medicine, who graduated from med school in 1977. He focuses on wellness now. My wife has been under his care for several years and was concerned about the possiblity of my future health, especially the connection of metalosis and Alzheimer's, or other mental issues resulting from my implants. I took her advice more seriously after my humerus was cut open to remove the stem.
Are you having any of the symptoms typical of heavy metal poisoning, or was this just precautionary on your part? Remember if these metals were "freed" from the bone during a surgical procedure, and are now circulating, sometimes waiting for the liver and kidneys to process and remove them can be a prudent choice. After my hip revisions, my metal levels were monitored for 2 years, and everything retreated to normal values without any need for chelation or other therapy.
Good luck with your coming appointment.
No symptoms yet.
I have 15 y.o. bi-lateral Birmingham hip resurfacings, done in Syracuse NY (not sure if we can say dr's names here) by a most prominant surgeon. I have had pain and elevated cobalt and chromium ever since! Metal levels around 6-7, never over 10, which is these resurfacing doctors revised new "limit". It used to be a limit of 1.
I also have, in the past 7 years, developed tinnitus, and blurred/distorted vision. My right hip has painful limited ROM. They both pop and squeak like a rusty hinge, at times. I have pain with every step. Lots of neuropothy which back doctors and podiatrists alike all agree is coming from my hips.
I walk and do stretched daily, or I wouldn't be able to even walk.
You would think they would be jumping to do revision surgury, but nope. The good doctor doesn't want to tarnish his records, I believe. They are securely in place, and that seems to be all that matters to him.
I tried another well known doctor who immediately agreed to do revisions on both, just before Covid...For some reason he changed his mind during that time, and as of most recent, would not even return my call when I was in severe pain.
To say I'm disgusted and have given up would be an understatement! I have not even had my metals checked in 2-3 years now. It's like why bother?
Revisions are complex. You need a really skilled surgeon who has done many of them. I would recommend traveling to find such a surgeon if there is not one in your market.
