Strange symptoms rapidly worsening -back pain, vibrating legs and body

Posted by tennis123 @tennis123, Jun 3, 2023

I have been having extremely weird symptoms and I've been having a hard time getting in to see a neurologist. I have been having extremely bad low back pain for about 6 months now with weird tingly sensations in the area. It has progressed and gotten severe and now am having muscle spasms in my legs and pelvic area. I am now also experiencing a vibrating sensation in my pelvis and both legs if I sit down. If I lay back and put any pressure on my spine, I am now experiencing it throughout my whole body. It only occurs when putting pressure on my back. If I lay down on my stomach it doesn't occur. Has anyone heard of this?

@tennis123, It sounds similar to the symptoms associated with a pinched nerve.

You mentioned not being able to get an appointment with a neurologist. Have you tried to get a referral through your doctor?

@tennis123 - Months ago, I had posted a comment not identical to your situation but odd sensations in feet when simply touching areas of my back, more intense in the L-3 to S-1 area. I experience no pain. I've been to about 6 neurologists since 2015 and no one could give me an explanation. Even sitting, if I touch upper area of my back below shoulder blade, there are sensations in ankles and feet. I thought this would have been a smoking gun but no, even folks at Mayo said no relationship to my PN. I tried a tens unit, no help. It almost feels like areas of the body have a high level of sensitivity. Since the docs have no explanation, all I can do is write this off as another possible weird symptom of PN. In other words...add it to the list! Ed

Same here, lower back pain, neuropathy, buzzing and shooting pain in legs and sometimes arms and hands. After MRI neurologist said it is caused by severe arthritis in the lumbar region of my spine and compression of discs. Here’s a good diagram of a spine with nervous system and look at all of the nerves running through and out of every part of your spine.

I can so relate! The crazy sensations throughout my whole body have kind of taken over my life. Thank you for the chart. It sort of says it all, unfortunately. It’s such a complex system. Sometimes I feel so helpless. Has anyone out there experienced a feeling like your torso (front and back) is in a constant state of spasm 24/7?? I feel like I’m wearing a corset made of wood. When it’s at its worst, I have to lie flat on my back for a bit of relief. I’ve experienced this for 3 years and none of my doctors have ever heard of it. Thank you for listening. This support group is totally new to me and I’m very appreciative that I stumbled across it. ❤️

@blearyeyes Hi, thank you for your comment. I am sorry you experienced that. Unfortunately for me I don't have an answer yet. I had a normal lumbar MRI with no abnormalities noted at all.

Kat, I get similar sensations around my abdomen. It feels like my muscles get tight in my lower back and in my abdomen. It feels like someone is giving me an uncomfortable hug.

I also forgot to mention I've been having extreme heat sensitivity for the past few months. I've had all the tests to rule out things such as hyperthyroidism etc. I will have hot flashes and start sweating from the central area of my face profusely.

I also have severe lower back pain. Lost sensation in my upper right thigh only in the front. I was going to have a radio frequency ablation done next week, but canceled it so I could go to the chiropractor and try spinal decompression to see if I can get some relief. If this is not successful, then I will go back to the pain doctor and get this ablation. Aleve works better than gabapentin but Doctor says do not take Aleve every day or you will kill your kidneys.

Thanks for posting the chart. Very helpful in understanding the distribution of nerves and how they seem to be concentrated around the lower back.

Hi,

I've made a post in another group but I am convinced that I may have a form of neuropathy, so I thought I would post here and see if anyone has any advice or has experienced similar symptoms.

I am in my late 20s and have been having strange symptoms for a few years that have been having a waxing and waning kind of pattern. The symptoms include tingling, whole body fasciculations, muscle tightness and spasms. Most recently for the past few months, I have been having terrible hot flashes with excessive sweating on the central areas of my face, terrible neck and back pain (tightness with sharp stabbing, burning areas of pains in random areas of my spine), and worse tingling/fasciculations/spasms. My muscles have started shaking when doing things such as if I squat down or lean my head on my arm, when this sort of thing never happened previously. When I sit down my entire lower body feels like it's vibrating. I haven't received a diagnosis, and I don't know what to do at the point as everything seems to be worsening and I'm at my wits end. I have had all sorts of testing and everything has come back normal. It is worsening so fast that I'm considering going to the ER but I know it would probably be a massive money sink without much benefit. Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any advice?

Hi @tennis123, I see that you haven't found any answers from the first discussion you started in the neuropathy group. Unfortunately like most members on Connect, we are not doctors and cannot diagnose conditions although we can share similar experiences. You have a lot going on for being so young and I know that has to be frustrating not being able to get answers. I do agree with you that going to the ER probably isn't going to help with a diagnosis, just my non medical opinion. If it were me, I would try to set up an appointment at a teaching hospital or major health facility like Mayo Clinic that uses multidisciplinary teamwork, physician-led governance, and patient-centered health care.

Is it an option for you to seek help at a teaching hospital or major health facility?

Have you been tested for fibromyalgia? Ask you Dr. about Gabapentin, as well.

I am so sorry you are suffering like this. Have you been tested for MS?
