Ischial bursitis

Posted by ch47 @ch47, Jul 8, 2023

Has anyone been diagnosed with this? I have terrible pain in area between buttocks and hamstrings. For 3-4 years. Siting for more than 10 minutes at a time is almost impossible.
I have been doing intense physical therapy on and off for 6 years since an automobile accident. I’m in pretty good shape, except for this pain.
Finally diagnosed with ischial bursitis and having an MRI in two days to see if there are any tears in the hamstrings.
Too much PT?
Too much trail walking?
If there are tears, how are they repaired?

I’m using diclofenac 1.3 patches cut in half to take the edge off.
I’ve tried most RX meds and over the counter things.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Rachel and Jennifer,

Thank you for sending this video!
I am sure that I have CSS, at some levels. Any stress totally aggravates my butt pain…probably the worst thing in my life now. Diagnosed recently with ischial bursitis, which makes sleeping, sitting for any short time, of course travel, etc etc really miserable or undoable. I was diagnosed with Levator ani syndrome about 4 years ago, and asked how to heal it. Doctor said no way to heal. Time…??? Unbearably painful. It has eased up some, and my urologist had helped with some rectal meds that take the edge off.
All of this after an accident that left no visible or obvious damage.
I have severe scoliosis, so I am sure there was some nerve damage as I braced for the big hit.
As the video mentioned, I was a type A, golfing, skiing, sailing, gardening, hiking…didn’t even know I had scoliosis until I was 50 with a routine chest X-ray.
I am otherwise very healthy for 71.
Now I go for a dentist appointment, routine check up etc, not to mention a treatment of some sort, and my normal low blood pressure skyrockets.
I go home and take my blood pressure for three days, just to make sure it is still normal.
Gave up all the meds, except for some low dose naltrexone, which was recommended recently.
I just want my life back at some level and unsure how to do it.
Florida Mayo is like 4-5 hours away.
Does insurance cover this three week program-where do you stay?
Are there any books, videos, or programs of this sort that are closer to Augusta GA?
Anyone out there have experience with this type of healing process? Would be great to hear from you…
Thanks again…

Hello @ch47 - You say what many others who live with chronic conditions say, "I just want my life back". The good news is that you can get your life back - it may look different than what you were accustomed to however, but Mayo Pain Rehab Center can definitely show you how to do it. I'm a prime example, I graduated the PRC two and a half years ago and it was one of the best things I'd ever done for myself and overall well-being. While my conditions and symptoms remain, they have lessened and are better managed from 4 perspectives:
1. Physically
2. Emotionally
3. Behaviorally
4. Chemically

Yes, insurance covers the program. I was covered by Medicare with an out-of-network supplement plan. I live in NY so I did incur the out of pocket expenses of travel, hotel and meals. I'm unsure of whether there are any comprehensive pain rehab programs near Augusta, GA. Have you googled or checked with your PCP?

Here's a helpful overview of the Mayo PRC program. It provides detail of what to expect:
Mayo Clinic Pain Rehabilitation Center -

Also, here is a direct link to apply to Mayo Clinic should you choose to get the ball rolling:
Mayo Clinic Application -

You can complete electronically or call direct and speak to a Mayo representative. Everyone at Mayo is extremely helpful and courteous.

Lots of homework! I want to congratulate you on giving up all meds except LDN. That's not always easy, and you are much further ahead of the game. What other questions may I answer for you? Do you feel that an all-inclusive rehabilitation approach would be beneficial?

Thank you for this info!
When listening to the video, I made some notes along the way, and wrote down the 4 things that you sent, but great to have them in one place with the information you sent. I will read more on this type of rehab; have one more question…actually two, are you there all day (🤞) and do they provide transportation to and from a hotel that would be close to Mayo?
I am hoping that my nerve ablation last week, and prolotherapy (if needed) will give me some relief. But if not, I want to be mentally prepared for another step.
Thank you again for sharing!

Been years since I’ve had this issue…so I can totally appreciate your frustration! You say your butt hurts, every where, spreading to thighs and hamstrings, and just give you more pt and meds.
I reached a point where I just started telling every doctor I saw about my very personal issues. I didn’t care anymore.
Finally looked up on Dr Google, all of my specific symptoms, areas and ischial bursitis came up. Inflammation. Big drugs don’t help inflammation. Quit big drugs.
Had pt write down all of the painful areas in medical terms, and then took to my orthopedist. I had never discussed this pain with him because I didn’t think this very personal issue/area was something that he dealt with. I let him diagnose, and told pt what he said. She could not previously tell me what it was, because she is not a doctor. Both of them agreed with Dr Google 😂
So, after spine ablation heals and is hopefully effective, at least in some areas, he suggested prolotherapy if needed.
Pain in thighs and hamstrings is starting to dissipate a little, hope it continues up the body…
Also, new pelvic pt in town that does bio feedback. After I see what is going on, will ask for RX to learn that.
Have the doctors “given up” on you? Can you try another approach with a different kind of doc? If my knee hadn’t been in horrible pain after I stopped the oxy, I never would have thought of seeing an orthopedist for my pelvic pain. Pt did fix knee…hey, it’s a start!
Are you on Medicare? If so, you should be able to explore some other routes without much if any expense depending on your back-up insurance.
I was told early on, 50, that surgery would never help my scoliosis, just don’t ever get fat!!! How is that for a good start to health care…
If you want to chat about anything, please feel free to pm me. Who knows?
I will be looking at the info that was just posted about the Mayo Clinic 3 week program to help with chronic pain…if all else fails, might be something else in the toolbox.
I’m with you…

You're welcome. Yes, you are in class for 15 straight weekdays from about 7:30-4. The program is on a sliding schedule. The hotel I stayed at in Florida was directly across the street from Mayo and they provided shuttles to and from. Best of luck with your pending procedure. Will this be your first nerve ablation?

REPLY

Yes, first ablation, and starting to feel better in my thighs, etc, and somewhat moving up.😁 didn’t wear any diclofenac patches last night 🤞 so another plus.
Am still taking low dose naltrexone, but asked for lower dose (3mg) to start at two weeks. I already have some 1.5, will try a week after the 3, if that is good.
Want to see how the procedure actually worked, but that takes time, and want to be comfortable during that time.
Great information to have, presume there are restaurants in hospital and walking distance to hotel.
There is a new pelvic pt here, that practices biofeedback. Will ask for an RX and see if that will help-only thing I have not tried.
Of course, this is not the same as the total immersion at Mayo, but she is around the corner sort of…😁 will try…
If I am not happy with my overall results, Will seriously consider Mayo. Thanks for information, and at some future time may pm you for more specifics on the whole Mayo thing.

I met with the most amazing functional medicine doctor today she did buy a Feedback. She was basically telling me what was happening inside of my body and everything she said was making sense. I am starting on herbal regimen and hopefully one day I’ll be able to get off of all of these medication‘s I’m on. She is the first person in years as far as the medical professionals that has made me feel seen. Let the journey begin

So happy for you!!!
Believe it or not, our new neighbors stopped by, and brought their new toys, Medigun, I call it thumper. I use it everywhere it’s sore or hurts, 4-5 times a day. Bought the smaller one and use in on the low level. Almost 2 weeks. AMAZING how all of my muscles, tendons, ligaments etc have loosened up and soooo much pain has gone away. I can not believe it.
So glad you are making some progress!!!
