Info on 4.1cm

I am sixty nine, in good health! Recently had an echocardiogram and a stress test during which they found a 4.1 cm aortic aneurism. Totally unexpected by the way! The cardiologist said it was a 'small' aneurism and he didn't seem too concerned about it. Said we'd monitor it and also said I'd probably die from something else before that got me! Said they had a tendency to grow very slowly so it could be many years before it became a problem. Any feedback about this would be appreciated.

My AAA was discovered 8 years ago at 3.4cm. A Cat Scan in May 2024 found it at 4.6cm. Another scan in May 2025 found it hasn't increased in 12 months, still 4.6cm.
As a reasonably healthy 80yo, i'm hoping for a few more active years yet. My surgeon will send me for a scan every 12 months, and in the meantime, i've learned to not worry about it, & get on with living......Scotty.

Hi all , was recently diagnosed with as ascending aortic aneurism at 4.5 . Have been reading a lot of posts and info and am confused about excercise . What about golf ? Is it ok to still play or is it too risky I’m 75 and still in relatively good shape although still a bit heavy . Working on that . Thanks

Hello, I have the same type of Aneurism as you. Mine was found doing a routine echo because of family history of heart disease. I have a 4.2. 6 months later I had it checked again and it was the same. I will keep checking every year and hope I never have to have surgery. My understanding is keep BP low and Cholesterol low.Good luck to you ( I am 65)

Thanks for replying. I am just the opposite. I want to get the darn thing fixed and out of my body! Soon as possible! To me, the surgery stress will be temporary whereas this watch and wait stress is constant and relentless! Better to be done with it I say! I wish you luck also!

Exercise has been an ongoing question re my own aneurysm. The advice i've gained from my doctor, and the exercise physiologists at my gym, is that any form of cardio is not only ok, it's encouraged. Walking, biking, swimming, all seems to be fine. The big no no seems to be heavy lifting & straining.
So I'm guessing a game of golf would be ok, but I would suggest you use a buggy, don't carry a heavy bag of clubs around the course. I go to the gym 3 days per week, & my AAA has stabilised over the past 12 months. Whether the exercise has had anything to do with that, I would not know. I'll ask my surgeon when I see him in 10 days time.
